I have a 1997 Eagle Talon Tsi Awd. The problem is that when you shift to second gear it kind of grinds when putting it into second. although when you get it into second it works just fine. also every other gear works good.

Thats kinda hard to diagnose but I would like to vote for bad 2nd gear syncros? Do any of the gears pop out by themselves while driving? Especially 1st?
 
no but if that was the problem how easy or hard would it be to fix how do I check if thats the problem

Well I've never worked on a n/t spyder so to be honest I dont know how much labor is involved but you would have to remove your transmission and take it appart and inspect it. On a 1g turbo that generally takes 1-3hours to do. On a 2g turbo it takes anywhere from 4+ hours to do depending on what tools ya have.

Just buy a service manual and read up. Its easy with the right tools :)
 
you can fix sycro slip for a moment with some Lucas Transmission Fix at Autozone. Slip some in your transmission and it will fix the problem for a few....you need to take the transmission to a shop to put new syncros in
 
this actually started happening to me, i was just gonna get a new tranny and put it in. how much does it cost to get the synchros re-done and checked out?

Same promblem has heppen to me..
Our dsm are prone to have a 2nd gear or 3rd gear sycro promblem..
I already had to replace 1 tranny, due to loseing the 2nd in high rpm's...
But even with, a differnt used tranny has same effect...
I read somewhere on here in another forum.. A way to adjust your shifter. To make it shift easy..
But also a new trany is about $1200-$2000 for a shep tranny.. and maybe a quick rebuild is $600-$700..
 
A good tip for old trannies is that shifter mod on vfaq for 1g's. There isnt one for 2g's but I wish I had made one for you guys.

Clifnotes on it was put a screw in the right spot on the shifter to prevent over throw and prevent killing your transmission.

If you use a hex head self tapping screw in the right place on the base plate closest towards the arm rest, you can prevent 2nd, 4th, and reverse from ever being overthrown. But you have to do it in just the right place or your gears will be either impossible to be shifted in, or the shifter may get stuck on the screw. It just takes some common sense and good eyeballin' to make it work. Its as easy as taking a drill and a screw, some time, and thats all. :)
 
Hey I'm having the same problem in my car. I was wondering if it would be a good time to replace the clutch and flywheel along with the syncros?? Is it gonna help out overall or is it a waste of money to buy the flywheel and clutch to go with it?
 
If you think your gonna be needing a clutch within the next year...sure go ahead and do it now, but if there is some life left in it, then no. No reason to spend money on stuff thats not broken.
