i think i figured out where my ticking noise was coming from! it seems like it would make sense now too..the ticking noise story in a nutshell - i replaced the water pump, and it was fine, started making a ticking noise heard most audibly under the car, or near the drivers side front wheel. well it just hit me, when i jacked up the car, and supported the engine up to get to the pump, i had to jack the engine up, and i used the oil pan, now i dont know anything at all about the pan, but is there like anything in there that would move or if i bent the pan, hit the pan and tick??:talon:

If you bent the pan a little bit it should be fine and you shouldnt have any ticking from there. Go through everything and make sure nothing is touching the belts or getting in the way of anything. In other words double check your work.

No. It is simply a cover that catches the oil, allowing a pick up tube to recirculate the oil. But the tube is stationary. The only thing moving above the oil pan is the crank. If you hit a very large boulder while driving 80, it might dent it enough to where it rubs the pan. ROFL But then it sound like BANG BANG BANG.

If you didn't use a piece of wood between the oil pan and jack, or some other means to spread the load from the small jack surface to the pan, then yes, you could have dented the pan. However, that should be pretty obvious if in fact that's what happened. Other that that, nothing I can think of.

If you dented the pan enough about the only thing that would hit it is the crank and that would make more noise than a tick I would imagine and probably rip a hole in the pan.

As stated, double check your work.

I've been thinking about this for a few days.

Is it possible that the pan has been distorted enough to affect the oil pump pick up tube? The pick up tube is really close to the bottom of the oil pan, and it's *possible* that the force of suction is flexing the pan or pickup tube, or a oil pan baffle has broken loose.

And, since I'm just guessing here, it's possible that the pick-up is restricted, and you're hearing backlash in the oil pump gears as it tries to suck oil thru the restricted pick up tube. Remember, the balance shaft is driven by the oil pump gears themselves, and if there isn't oil there, you're going to hear some noise from the gears themselves...as it takes some force to rotate the balance shaft.

I wasn't going to post anything, because I've never seen anything like what you're describing. You'd really have to bend the pan to get anywhere near the crank. The pick up tube is a whole different story, it's only ~ 1/4 inch off the bottom of the deepest part of the pan.

How badly distorted is the pan, and where is the dentage?

Well only thing i can tell you is i did the same thing and the last guy is right...you would have had to really dinmg that pan in to hit the crank and the oil sunk is only a 1/4 of an inch from the pan..... when i jacked mine like that it bent it in just far enough to bend the the screen on the sunk.....But i never got a noise from that at all.... now another possibility with that that i doubt is that it could have bent the sunk to a degree that its hitting the crack as the crack spins..... how far is it bent in?
