ill make this one as easy as possible with making a HUGE paragraph.

tuning with maft and safc

first we set the maft to 550cc for base....car ran like cracp i.e. knock, high egt, bad high fuel trims when trying to tune.

we then decided to try tuning for 450cc on the maft. my buddy and i (mainly my buddy) got the car to tune like a champ at wot for 10psi. here are the specs for hi on the safc...

1k 2k 3k 4k 5k 6k 7k

0 +2 +4 +3 +2 +1 +1 (at WOT...no knock, GREAT egt's)

however.....my fuel trims wer pretty low after a day of driving
low-82%
mid-95%
high-82% (the safc lo setting were like -15% across the board.

i know its still in the range according to the maft but i also feel my egts could be a little better when cruising at the 65-70mph range. (it likes to hang at the 1400 to 1500F maybe a little more) (makes me think a lot of fuel is being burned while cruising)

question: should i try tuning with a slightly larger inj. or keep it as is, be happy and tune for more boost?

ps. car has 550cc injectors with a b16g.

sorry the question is a little misleading

oops forgot to mention......palmIIIc with pocketlogger software. thats how i know my trims are where they are at.

Looks like you could lean it out a bit. Since you seem to have better control of the fuel trims with the MAFT set for 450s, I'd leave it there and just tune with the SAFC.

I dont like to tune with the MAFT, I usually leave all the settings set to 0's and tune with the SAFC-II/DSM-link. Seems like it would be easier to tune with one device rather than two.

i have had good progress tuning with the safc for WOT with the base at 450cc its just that i feel my trim parameters are off. ill see if i can download the log when i get off work. what i think ill try is set the tune for 460 or 470 on the maft base, that way the fuel trims parameters will move to be more managable with the safc. this also means i may have to retune wot with the maft WOT knob as well as fine tune with the safc.

iv'e havent had too much trouble tuning with both. its just hard to get the trims down. i actually kinda regret not going with dsm link. but since i wanted to get more exerience tuning i wanted to start from the bottom! :toobad:

will your egt's run high if too much fuel is being injected? thats the assumption i made. i think ill do a search on that.

EGT will run hot if the engine runs lien, not from too much fuel.

you see and i knew THAT for sure, i just wasnt sure if it would happen if too much few was added also. thanks for the feedback guys...

well i couldnt figure out how to download the log, but ill assure you it was good! ima test my settings tonite and give some feedback later. thanks guys

If there is too much fuel, and it's burning in the exhaust mani, that could raise your EGTs.

i knew that was the case esp. since my gas mileage sucked arse!, im just gonna try to set the base one more time, drive for a few days on no boost, let the trims settle and go from there. im not dogging the maft setting, but is sure isnt for newbie tuners like me! ill post up in a few days on the same thread and keep people udated, that is if anyone's curious.:thumb: :laser:

I'd like to know if that resolves your problem, if not simply for future reference :thumb: .

final update: regarding tuning with maft and safc

after a week of driving around trying to keep my fuel trims in order as well as tune for some wot pulls i have come to the conclusion that zeroing out the maft for 450cc, adjusting the idle knob a little, and doing the maing tuning with the safc was the best alternative for me as a beginning tuner. my safc settings were -20% across the board at low idle, this kept my trims around 100% respectively. my wot tuning was all done on the safc, i was able to keep the parameters within view of the screen. it was a PAIN to try tuning any other way. i would like to disclose that i am a newb at tuning and to me this was the best method for starters. im sure more experienced tuners would use the maft to its potential. currently im tuning 0 counts of knock at 10psi. i will sloooooowly bring the boost up and tune around 2psi at a time till i've reached the turbo's potential. this week was a pain. but it sure helped me learn the importance of tuning as well get a feel of my dsm (my first one at that!) i come from having an rsx type-s na to a 16 year old dsm boosted with a b16g. talk about a big diff! but i dont regret it one bit. hope my info helps anyone even though im know these subjects have been covered.

A few more tips i can give ya, just from my experience. Use the right NGK plugs, those make a big difference. Also if you run too rich you can usually tell. It will start to misfire at WOT if your running rich. Happen to me until I got it tuned better. Also make sure you have NO boost leaks. If you fix a boost leak, it is best to re-tune or at least make sure your not running lein after the boost leak was fixed.

Otherwise glad to hear that your having fun with your boosted DSM.

Glad to hear that you got it straightened out. You could probably dial in the tune closer to maximum potential by getting on a dyno, but it sounds like you're doing well.

yeah so far im at 14-15 psi. i would slowly turn the knob up 1-2 psi at a time, datalog, then tune out the knock. i've been really excited! hopefully all these WOT pulls won't hurt my motor too much. and i definately want to get on a dyno but i think the closest one with dsm exp. would be 3.5 hours away. what i really need is a wideband. getting one soon though.
