So, my car has been down for more than two months because of this noise. no one can seem to help me. Now, I have already taken the timing cover off and ran it like that. It still makes the noise. I checked and replaced the tensioner pulley and checked the idler pulley. I am completley out of ideas. So please help me out if you can. http://videos.streetfire.net/video/04CFF26E-334D-426E-8218-573FC5C07E23.htm

This may sound stupid, but here goes. Take a 3/8 to 1/2 inch rubber hose about 2 ft long. Hold the one end to your ear and probe with the other end around where you think you here the noise. This will help to pinpoint the sound.

Sounds like something in the head is malfunctioning. Like its slipping or somthing, hard to tell.

You do any modificatoins on it latley?

Sounds to me like one of your valves is not sitting right. DO a compression test to see if ## valves are seating..

No major modifications, I went from an evo 3 back to a 14b. Was running it at 17 lbs. This may be a dumb question but if I just turn the key on my coil pack will sometimes make bad noise. Could the coil pack be making that noise when it's running. Thanks for the replies so far and keep them coming if you can.

what kinda noise is your coil pack making? the same as in the video? the car hold a steady idle or does it missfire at all? it kinda sounds like my buddys last coil pack before it went out but it wasnt as high pitched, i started my buddys n/t one day it made a noise kinda similer to that than started to miss real bad a couple days later it wouldnt start, turned out to be a bad coil

I would doubt it would be the coil pack, but these DSMs are quite strange. If it was a distibuter, i could understand a noise like that, but these are a coil pack, just a little bit different. Do the standard compression test. See what the results are. Let us know.

I just had a problem with my tensioner pulley. The noise is very different than that, and you notice the timing belt flapping up and down when the pulley is shot.

Have you driven the car. Does it move? Could have spun a bearing. Something with either inside the head, or something with your internals. Tear her apart. Do a compression test first. Make sure your valves arent bent or not sealing all the way.

Im his friend i help him with the car..and the car is driveable it just makes the noise we did a compression test and it was perfect across the board...

thanx
Jesse

keep the replies comming if you can and yes we did try the hose ideah...the only thing we can pinpoint is its on the drivers side of the car..

Take an oil sample, send it out for testing and see if it is a spun bearing in the bottom or top end. Try chaning the viscosity of the oil and (higher or lower) and see if it changes the sound.

You got a data logger or anything? Something you can see to check your CELs and to verify that your timing and everything arent off a couple degrees. If you can get a hold of one, do it and make sure everything is ok on the data logger. Go from there then.

You might just want to rip the whole timing side off. See if anything is loose or perhaps your auto tensior went out on you. It will only take you approx. 30 minutes max to take off the timing side. Make sure when you put it back together, you have all the timing marks lined up.

I've already taken the timing side apart. I've taken the auto tensioner off, I replaced the tensioner pulley, and I checked the idler pulley. Nothing wrong. As soon as I can get a hold of a compression tester I will check it again. When I checked it before this problem it was perfect. Thanks for all the replies so far, and please keep any suggestions coming. I think I'm gonna spend 130 dollars on a set of lifters and see how that goes if my compression is ok.

well, jesse already said you had pefect compression

and he already said he did the hose thing.

It doesn't sound like lifters at all to me. It almost reminds me of belt rubbing noises or a bad bearing in one of the tensioners. Regardless it sounds like it's coming from the timing belt area.

Let us know what you find,

Andy

I'm another one of his friends, and I just talked to him about the problem. He says after another compression test, he got 120 psi on cylinder 1, and 140 psi on cylinder 2, then stopped after that. He told me that he could see/hear air coming up from cylinder 1 while testing it, but didn't see the same thing happening with cylinder 2. Any other help for him?

Run full compression all four cylinders with the motor hot and then run a wet test to see if compression rises. Number two usually runs the leanest and is more prone to compression loss, but it's tough to tell if it's rings without a wet test.

Let us know,

Andy

Update: Well, I pulled my head off and actually had two bad valves. BUT that wasn't the problem. After swapping heads and putting everything back together it STILL makes that noise. One suggestion was balance shafts. So I'm thinking of doing the eliminator kit and seeing what that does. Other than that I'm out of ideas.
