First off let me introduce myself. My name is James and am new to the forums. I am wanting to get into dsm cars and am currently looking at a 97 gst spyder. I took a look at the car today and saw some stuff that I have been wondering about. On the exhaust tips there is a abundance of carbon deposits on it. Is this something I should worry about? Ive read that this is because its obviously running rich. He has an air intake installed, would this lead to a running rich problem? The owner also says the "cel" light is on due to this installation. Is that true? Just wondering if carbon deposits like this is something to worry about. I will be checking the turbo for shaft play next time I look at it. It seems to run fine and he is replacing the wheel bearings. Is there any other tell tale signs of premature wear on a(n) turbo engine I should look for? It has 96000 miles on it and is in pretty good condition. Any help would be awesome.

The first thing that I would do is take the car for a test drive straight to autozone and see what's causing the check engine light to come on. I have done many things to my car including an intake and I haven't gotten a code from them. (unless he forgot to hook his MAF back up after install). For the most part the black deposits are normal. Stock eclipses normally run rich. That's how they're programmed from the factory.

Yea I was planning on taking it to autozone to double check and see what code comes up. Also, from what ive been reading the deposits are normal. Thanks for confirming that. Should I also ask to take a look at the intercooler for oil in it? If you guys have any other suggestions as what to look for please let me know, this is my first time looking into a turbocharged car. Thanks alot

Ok the intercooler will ###### have some oil in it if you have time take it out and use some purple power in it and some water after its clean let it dry out for awhile over night is good i did this to my talon tsi and noticed a big differnce and its got almost 100k miles right? hopefully it doesnt already have crank walk....ive had a 2g and a few of my friends did we have a few mods knn air filter and full exhausts i had a ported 14b and alittle after we all hit 100k one after another had crank walk i had a 98 gst my friend had a 95gst and my other friend had a 97 tsi awd and all ended up with crank walk....just somthing to check into...and if you want to do normal mantince and clean it up it wouldnt hurt to take the trottle body elbow off and clean it and inside the intake manifold alittle

If this is your first time buying a turbocharged car, checking the turbo for shaft play is a really good idea, since the turbo is 96k miles old. You may not be able to tell by driving it if it is your first time driving a turbocharged car. I just know that my GST with no engine mods pulled harder than the other turbo'd DSMs I test drove that had plenty of mods. I went checked the turbos for shaft play, and the one I ended up buying had the least amount of play, and consequently, the most pull from the turbo.
Also, when I installed my intake, my car threw a CEL and it ended up that my idle air control valve got messed up. I'm not positive that it was related to the intake install, but it happened immediately after I got the intake on. Just something to look out for. I don't see how a new intake would cause it to run rich, since it would be flowing more air. It would make it run lean if anything.
