So i am having my tranny rebuilt by shep, but they recommend an LSD after they rebuild it? How come? What does the LSD do? I have a 96 TSi with no mods except a K&N FIPK..is it worth getting a LSD?

LSD= Limited Slip Differential. When you lose traction on one tire the diff will send power over to the tire with traction. I would get it if I was rebuilding my tranny. Does your rear diff have LSD?

The stock differential is what they call "open" meaning that when one tire starts to spin it sends all the engines power to that wheel. This obviously hurts exceleration and causes extrememly bad torque steer(pulling to one side when going WOT). There are different types of L.S.D.s and they work different ways but they acheive the same results.

With a torsen style L.S.D. such as the quaife it will send power to the wheel that is NOT spinning. So if you launch and one wheel spins it will send all your power to the other wheel. The wheels will then power recieve power and instead of only having one wheel being powered both wheels will be powered.

With a clutch type L.S.D. the diff has little mini clutches that grab together and lock the front wheels together effectively. So when you excelerate both wheels spin because the L.S.D. is prividing enough force to keep both wheels spinning instead of one.

There are also L.S.D. inserts that put pressure on the stock dif to turn it into a clutch style diff. These types will ultimately fail and they put unnesecary pressure on the stock diff shortening its life.

There are pros and cons to all of the above types of lsds you just have to do some research and figure it out yourself. Everyone thinks their type of diff. is the best and the person trying to decide which one he wants to go with never gets a straight answer. It is, however, the single best mod you can do for a fwd dsm. I always see fwd dsmers spending thousands of dollars in go fast mods only to not be able to put the power down because they decided to skip the L.S.D. I think you would benefit more from this mod than any other single mod you can do to your car.

Is the LSD hard to install? How much would the labor if was to take it a shop? Looks like am getting one tho, i hate torque steer.

I'm thinking on getting the SBR Tranny LSD. Anyone have experience with it? Or what LSD do you guys recommend?
