Well i was driving my car home from a friends house and i was just driving steady in 3rd gear doing about 40mph. All of a sudden the car bucked pretty hard as if it lost engine power some where. This was quickly followed by the check engine light so i pulled it off the road into a parking lot. The engine didnt sound good so i cut it off. I left the car and came back an hour later. I had low compression in one cylinder and thought made i lost a cylinder, so i checked the compression on all of them, but they all had compression. Soit was not one of the cylinders. Next i checked the belts to make sure i didnt lose one. All there and tight. So now i dont know whats wrong, so i started it up and the car idles fine, and the check engine light was gone. I drove it around the lot and it was fine too. So i drove it home and seems fine now. Anyone know what might be wrong?

how old is all your ignition stuff (coil plugs wires) they could have caused a cylinder to shut down which would make that sort of a thing happen. I had the same type of problem and it was my coil pack starting to go.

hope this helps
Chris

1st thing comes to my mind is major boost leak, but what is weird is it fixed it self. I had my lower i.c. pipe come off and that makes the check engine light come on and drive like sh*t. Maybe you have a loose coupler or something like that, that some how moved enough to fix it self. But I was not aware that a c.e.l. would go off by itself.

Im not really sure how old they are. They car is going towards 100k and im not sure if the previous owner replaced any of them. My biggest concern is that it threw a code but then later that night when i started it again the check engine light was gone. I thought once it throws a code someone has to clear it?

I don't know if its similar or not, but I have had CEL's go on in my Dodge Ram, and then they fix themselves for some reason or another, it is a pre-OBD II model, similar to your car, maybe that has something to do with the CEL righting itself. I too, seem to think it is in the ignition system.

Well I have my erg valve blocked off and every once in a while I get a cell from that but if I turn the car off then back on it clears itself not sure if thats the same with 1g but I know mine does that. Just thought that it was like that for all Mits. just a thought

Does anyone know for sure if the car clearing a code by itself is right or wrong?
