173k, 2.0L.. auto tranny was just rebuild and warranty was up last month

I was driving home 2 nights ago, and I hit a small mound of snow on the passanger side that made my car bounce a little. The car came out of gear and there was pinging along with taps in the motor. The pinging was the torque converter loose.. bolts and all...

[I will get a recording of the sound my car makes]

luckily I have my brother [furacer] who fixed that problem. We trouble shooted for a while, even bought new spark plugs... spark plug wires.. didn't need new distributer since it was giving each plug spark..

I start it up, its fine.. but then it backfires a lot, makes tapping noises and shuts off after a few seconds if I do not give it gas. The car moves, but there is an extreme loss in power... A friend of mine, who is a dsm enthusiast stopped by and said my valves were not hitting my pistons, and he said I was "a lucky dsm owner" and gave me a smack on the back.. I'm glad thats not the case. He thinks the timing might of jumped, but he's not 100% sure.. if anyone can either stop by my house, or listen to the recording when I get it.. and help me out, I'd be more than greatful. If anyone is willing to fix it, I'm also willing to pay. I just don't see the point in paying a shop if I can either help a friend or do it myself..

Thanks for your time..

My car, yes.. sounds like a diesel...

here is the sound clip...

I have great power loss though, I barely made it up a hill on my way home after it happened...

someone said it could be the valves

so maybe
valves
timing

*sigh* this is driving me nuts

The way you're describing this problem leads me to believe that your timing is off.
I would have said distributer, but you said thats not the problem. So I'm leaning towards timing.

sorry.. I won't bump again.

I did a compression test, and its perfect on all 4..

I'll check the maf and then redo the timing...

the distributer seems to be putting spark to all 4 cylinders. We pulled the plugs to see if there was change in the engine, and there was.. I'll look it over again though.

i listened to your clip and it sounds just like my car when the timing belt jumped. when my timing belt jumped i had to have the cylinder head rebuilt because i had 8 bent valves but you might have gotten lucky if it only jumped a tooth or so. my car also did the same thing when i started it. it would run for about 5 seconds then it would die. so it sounds like you just just need to redo the timing and it should be fine. and when you are are timing your oil pump take out the plug on the back of the engine bock and see if you can stick a screw driver into the hole about 2 and a half inches. if you cant, turn the oil pump pulley untill you can and make sure the timing mark lines up. good luck.
