Well like the title said, I believe I spun a bearing. I have to drop the pan to know for certain, I hope it is something like a lose exhaust mani, or something, but with my luck, I just KNOW it is a bearing. Anyways, I have never been inside of an engine before, and I was wondering exactly what to look for, when looking for a spun bearing. Thanks...

Also any suggestions on fixing it?

Ok, a little update. I just got home from work, started it up, and the noise is not there now. So now I am really stumped as to what the culprit is. I have no idea where to go from here. What else could make a sound like a spun bearing, but only happen when it is warmed up? Lifters, valves? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

What type of noise was it? Was it more of a ticking sound, or a clack clack clack sound? Also, did the noise increase with the rpm's? A spun bearing will make a knocking sound wether the car has just been started in the morning, or if it has been driven all day long. If the noise went away, I would think that is probably isnt a bearing. Which is a good thing, I spun a rod bearing on my previous GST and it sucked. Although it did give me a reason to build the bottom end up. Good luck, and let us know if the noise returns.

It was a clacking sound. It does it after it warms up. I also tried pulling the plugs on each cylinder, but the sound didnt go away. I am think it might be the something in the valvetrain. Lifters, or something. I have already decided to use this as an excuse to build up my engine. I made a video of the sound, so as soon as I can find the damned cable to hook up the camera to my computer, I will upload the video so you can hear it for yourself. Thanks for your help. ;)

Ok here is the video. It doesnt sound all that good, but you can get a better idea. Engine sound. Thanks again for the help. I am gonna drop the oil pan tomorrow and look for metal shavings.

That sounds like something in the valvetrain. Maybe a bad lifter. I get the same type of noise from my valvetrain, but its just not quite as pronounced as yours. Just out of curiosity, how is your oil level? Is it right at the full mark? Try adding just a little extra oil in there, and see if that doesn't help it out a bit. I've always found that on my personal DSM's, adding that little extra oil seems to shut the lifters up the majority of the time.

I have plenty of oil. It just started doing it out of no where. I am going to change my timing belt, because I looked at it earlier, and the person I got the car from had a crappy NAPA brand instead of a mitsui. I just hope that it didn't jump timing or something.

The lifters on the 1g and 2g, they have too big of a gap and they tend to stick. That is what makes that sound. New 3g lifters that would fix that are only $105 on ebay.

If you are worried about your timing jumping, you can do a quick compression test. That will determine whether your valves are bent and how good the compression is. From there one, you can decide if you just want to get a whole new Racing Stage III head with new cams, springs, valves, etc., or what you wanna do. I would probley run it till it dies, then do a 6 bolt build up. :thumb:

I was thinking of building up a 6-bolt, but mine is an automatic, and crankwalk is non-existant in an auto, at least to my knowledge. So I am going to just go ahead and build up this engine. Any suggestions on what I should use. I want about 400 WHP when all is said and done, and I want a reliable engine. I have never built up an engine before, so any help with chosing parts will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. You guys are great.

Well, you can have crankwalk on any vechile. As far as parts, just use all forged internals. A nice guide that really is clear on everything is:
http://www.dsmtuners.com/tuning-guide/2gturbo/stage1power.php

I followed that with the basics of understanding DSMs, and now I have about a 450-500HP DSM. Great guide to follow along. :thumb:

Yeah I understand that you can get crankwalk on any vehicle, to my knowledge it is just extremly rare on autos. I have went over that upgrade path many times, but I am going to go ahead and do the engine now, since there is something wrong with it, and I will have to be tearing it apart anyways. Thanks again for the help. I am very happy it isnt a spun bearing.
