I've noticed the smell of gas whenever we stop the car and get out to wherever it is we were going and I would notice it. I thought it might be exhaust because my uncle put on a section of pipe under the car that I've seen leak.

I honestly have a hard time distinguishing the smell of gasoline from the smell of exhaust sometimes so that's what I thought it was, exhaust.

Now my wife has noticed the smell.(whom has a much better sense of smell than I)

A few minutes ago I got under car to look around and I found this, is this normal? or even safe?!?

(This is the first time I've posted pictures to a forum, so if they don't show up at first, let me know, or tell me what I did wrong. Thanks)

You will need to resize or post a link to the pictures as they are way to big, but besides that, there should be a rubber gasket that looks to have corroded and should just need replacing.

Holy Gigundo pictures Batman!

Hard to look at everything at once, but by the looks of it, you need a new rubber gasket. I would replace it ASAP. I could be wrong but like I said. It was hard to look at everything at once with the pictures that big.

Check the seal behind the cap that is soaked and see if it could possibly be that easy of a fix. Looks like most of it is coming from there.

Ah, much better. I agree with Mike. I would change that and it should take care of most of your problem.

Okay, I made them 30% smaller.

If that's a gasket, which I hope:

A) What precautions should I take?

B) Where would I get it? (Autozone or a mitsu dealer?)

C) Anything special I'll need?

D) How much of a pain is it to do?

E) I have a full tank of gas...any suggestions on how to get it out?

It looks like it should only be the three screws you see in the picture. I would just be carful not to make any sparks, and try to syphon some of the feul out to below the level of the plate.
Mike

What's the name of that gasket? I'm guessing the part on the left is the fuel pump, so what's the name of the other part?

I hate going into parts stores spending 10 minutes explaining what I need without knowing the name of the part.

Cant tell ya the exact name, but it is for the fuel gauge unit.
Mike
Hope that helps some :S

The guy at autozone said it's called the sending unit. Does that sound right?
It sounds like it. The oil pressure is wired to a sending unit, so I would assume the fuel does too.

A) What precautions should I take? THE USUAL WITH WORKING WITH FUEL GET THAT TANK EMPTY FIRST

B) Where would I get it? (Autozone or a mitsu dealer?) I WOULD CONTACT ROCKVILLE HAVE THEM SEND YOU A PIC OR A FAX OF THE TANK AND HAVE THE PIECE OVERNIGHTED TO YOU

C) Anything special I'll need? TIME AND PATIENCE FWD IS A PAIN LOVE THE AWD RIGHT IN THE HATCH AREA

D) How much of a pain is it to do? :barf:

E) I have a full tank of gas...any suggestions on how to get it out?
BUY A CHEAP SYPE PUMP AT A PARTS STORE AND GET A FEW GALLON CANS AND SOME TIME ROFL

I answered some of the ? in your original quote use a OEM gasket the nuts and bolts on the sender are probably corroded so be carefull when removing the 10mm nuts

If it breaks all apart see if u can get a tank assy at the local bone yard it will be empty and probably be a easier swap if all the bolts on the sender snap off from corrosion

Okay, AutoZone doesn't have the part. Smyth Auto said that it's an O-ring that only comes with the fuel pump, which A) doesn't make a whole lotta sense, B) Means I'll have to pay for a fuel pump that I don't need....

I'm still confused on what the name of the part is. If anyone can shed some more light it would help a lot.

I'm going to syphon the fuel out and check back here. Please help!!!

Picture update, I got the car jacked up, waiting for my chauffeur:tease: to show up to go get the syphon pump.

I took these and it looks like the fuel line has about had it too, and I'm not so sure that the leak isn't coming from the seal where the gas tank is put together.

Call rockville Mitsu or your Local Mitsu dealer have them fax/email you the pic of the fuel tank. THey will do this, pick out the gasket call them for a price have them ship it to you. Install

It looks like the gasket around the fuel sending unit the fuel pump is located in that sending unit inside the tank. thats in the pic on the left the right side? Seriously go to you local MITSUBISHI,DODGE dealer and have them pull a picture up of the tank it will show those items and the gaskets that seal them. Those are OEM parts only.
