M transmission was rebuilt about 5,000 mile ago and i've had a problem that started out once in a while but now its all the time. 1st gear (and only 1st gear) will pop out if I don't hold it in. This is what happens, I will press clutch in, shift into first and let go, it will immediatley kick out and go back to nuetral (engine revs up, car stands still) But, when I press the clutch in and hold the shifter hard upwards in first, it will make like a --click-- or some type of engaging sound and I can drive around all day in first without it poping out, I can even let go and it will stay! But the minute I shift up (like when I need to go faster then 5mph) and try to downshift at a stop light, if I dont hold it in again it will pop out. Someone said check the shifter linkages? I dont know how to do this. I am hoping it is not my tranny! Help me out fellow dsmers, it is out 2 year anniversary this month!!!

Well, I would look at the bearings and synchros for sure. Those little square detents on your hub sometimes wear out and when that happens, it won't hold in gear good. You may need to replace the detents along with the synchros if they weren't replaced last time.

Double check the bearings near first gear just to make sure.

Good Luck

Thanks for the quick reply, as long as its not the tranny then I wont hesitate to bring it to the local tranny shop. I have not even touched an awd tranny in my life so I am not sure what to look for. I will advise them to do what you said, thanks again.
