A whrrrr sound coming from the t-belt area. I pulled the cover and it was covered in oil, I then washed it to try and find the oil leak and after I started it, it has been missing and running like crap and barley any boost under throttle(like 2psi) and then I get a knock count of 43. I think after I washed it, it jumped time. It is not making any bad sounds from the engine or head now, just a miss and no power.
I need to know the best way to check and see if I jumped time...Is this possible, to jump time and the car still run OK....

And yes, I have checked the plugs, wires, coil pack is newer, fuel is all good, No cell codes either..

Bring the engine to TDC and make sure both cam dowels are at 12 o'clock, exhaust cam mark at 3 o'clock, intake cam mark at 9 o'clock and both are lined up with the cam sprocket center bolts. Compression test wouldn't hurt either, good luck.

Thanks for the info,, Yea, I am going to get a new compression tester in the morn. Thanks Again...
Is this even possible though, to jump time and the engine still run and sound OK
(other than no boost and slight miss).

One tooth and it will still run. Just check and verify all your marks to make sure it doesn't jump more and you wind up doing a complete head job.

Good Luck

1 or 2 tooth yes. Do the compression test and timing mark check first. If everthing checks out, we can then move on to something else. Did you ever locate where the oil leak was?

It jumped 3 :(  ............ I am so upset, I just took it to a local import mechanic, he said the Ballance shaft belt broke and took a eraser size chunk out of the side of the t-belt and that was enough w/the oil to make it jump. BUT, he really thinks the head is OK???? He also had to replace the auto tensioner(said it was leaking), he will have it back together in the morn, and is going to let me know the compression after it the belts are back on.

Has anyone every jumped that far and not killed the head(I drove it about 25 miles after the jump).

why is your timing belt covered in oil? that is NOT good and should be fixed right away. i would say check the crank seal first.

THE HEAD LIVED!!!!!!!! :thumb:  :D , No bent valves, after belt slipped 3 teeth WTF
The guy I had fix it is in shock, he said he has done over 100 dsm T-belt jobs and never seen this before.

AND the wild part is, I guess my ballance shaft belt has been busted and jammed up in the pulley for the last 2 years(look at pic, the Auto tensioner was weak also and replaced), he also did a water pump & cam seals(he said thats where the oil was from),
The compression is now 150 across the board, and the engine is so smooth now, it is a huge differance, I just thought it was so much rougher than my old GST or my 2g GST Spyder because of the AWD....I GOT SO LUCKY!!!!! It was $600 for parts and labor.

I do have one question though, he did not replace any of the pulleys, even though I said I wanted them changed, he said they were all in great shape, only changed the auto tensioner and water pump and belts, should I take it back and demand the pulleys done.
The car has 130k on it.

B.T.W. Never believe the person you bought your car from, the girl I got mine from said the T-belt job was done 20k ago when I bought it, My mechanic said the Ballance shaft that was all jammed up, was the original belt, he thinks a T-belt job had never been done since the car was made....It that even possible?????

I just bought my '90 Talon TSi a month ago from a friend of my brother. He had just had the timing belt and head redone...probably three weeks to a month before I bought the car from him because he broke the t belt and that was that.

Only the belts (T Belt and Balance Shaft) and the head work were done at that time. Nothing more. Just enough to get it running.

Anyhow, last week I am driving home and the t belt broke again. It looks like either the balance shaft seized or one of my pullies seized.

If you don't feel comfortable about the fact that he didn't replace the pullies (and you shouldn't) then get them replaced. Every knowledgable person that I have had discussion with on this site (including Old Mitsu) has said it's better to replace them while you're in there and have the peace of mind knowing that the whole timing system is fresh. I knwo I am buying a T Belt kit from slow boy racing that has everything in there. The belt, auto tensioner, pullies etc along with a water pump and new front case. My car has 153,000 miles on it and has 155 compressionon all but one cylinder (it's at 150 ish, probably 152). I'm not taking any more chances once I repair the car this time.

Like I said...Peace of Mind! :talon:

I agree, I would err on the side of caution and replace those pulleys.

You are correct, sir. Always use your common sense when dealing with used cars (especially DSMs). When I bought my GSX, the t-belt "only had 10k miles on it" but you better believe that's the first thing I replaced, just to be safe. :thumb:

But to answer your question, yes, it is theoretically possible, although highly unlikely that the t-belt was the original factory belt from 199x.

All that said, you got super lucky. Thank the stars, someone must have been looking out for ya. LOL.

I think I know what has happened, the girl I bought it from 2 years ago w/117k on it. And she said the T-belt had 20k on it. From what I have found today, The T-belt that came off was not the original but the Ballance shaft belt that was jamed up was the factory belt (by the markings on it). She had a piss poor T-belt job done.

The entire t-belt system has been oout of whack or somthing, It is like driving a new car now, it is 5x smoother, before at 75mph my gear shifter would vibrate and the whole car would just grrrrrrrr real loud, I just thought it was the AWD. It is now as smooth and quite as my girls Integra.
