I have a 92 tsi with all my mods listed in my profile. I have been fighting phantom knock for awhile now and still havnt fixed it yet. I replaced the knock sensor with a new one and it seemed to fix it at first and then gradually went back to normal, and now runs like crap again. I have notice that in any gear it will feel normal as I am accelerating normally and then once I hit 3k rpms I feel it just bog down, and then it runs poorly. When I shift into the next gear it will again accelerate normal and then at 3k it bogs down again. I am thinking it is something electrical since it does it at 3k only and always does it. I am going to swapping out to the 3rd gen revised lifters pretty soon, so hopefully that will help with my knock. I am just lost here on what to do. I have no boost leaks last time I checked which was yesterday.

-Test your coil pack's primary and secondary coils.
-Ohm your spark plug wires and make sure they're still within tolerance.
-Make sure you're running the correct spark plugs and they're not fouled. NGK BPR6(or 7)ES. Gapped at .028"
-Your boost leak test should yeild results of 20 psi for a minimum of 30 seconds
-Check your ECU like stated above for leaking or damage capacitors

I fried one ecu already. I got a freinds ecu in there now cause I am going to send mine to steve on here to fix it. I will check the thing tonite and see if I can smell anything fishy.

i know you just put in a new knock sensor but check it to see if its all gooey. if so you might be lookin at getting a new knocks sensor. lifter tick could also be your problem. you should see knock as soon as you step on the gas (knock sensor picking up the noise from the lifters). before you go spend money on new lifters try some lucas oil stablizer to see if the phantom knock is really comming from your lifters

hope that helps

Ill try that. I also noticed today before i left for school that it had a really bad idle surge. I went outside to start it up and let it warm up, cause we have a really bad cold front coming through. Id say it was probabyl about 30 degrees or so. It was out there running and first of all there was a really bad whine to it. then it was idleing and all of a sudden it just starts to surge like crazy from about 2200 to 1500 and it wouldnt stop.

Yeah not really yet. the windchill it was probably about 10-15 degrees. I will try to test the idle speed motor and see what happens there. I am going to pull my car in the garage tonight and start getting it all ready for the winter, checking everything and such. I hate driving it in the winter. But, it was either buy a junker that might end up costing more money to keep it runnin or through more parts on my talon. I CHOOSE OPTION B!! I just hope I can get these problems figured out so I can have fun with it this summer.
