Hey everyone I have a 99 Eclipse GS special edition one. Recentally my car has been having this crazy knocking noise. It does it around 1/4 to half throttle and around 3-5k rpms. I popped the hood to see if I could find it in there and I noticed it sound like it was comming from under the valve head cover. I touched it to see if I could feel anything and I could feel the vibrations from the noise, like something was hitting something and wasnt supposed to. Any ideas? Or need any more information? Thanks.

It is most likely your lifters if you hear like a ticking, knocking kind of noise....pull off the valve cover and check it out....one of the lifters is broken.

Sometimes on high milege engines the lifters starts moving side to side in a up and down motion insted of directly up and down causing a hellachous knock noise and sometimes lack of power. Take off the cover and feal if you can move them. :talon:

Where can I get lifters in case one is broken? And as far as them moving the wrong way, do I just need to tighten them down to prevent moving side to side?

Call down to the mitsu dealer to see what they quote you in pric, 9 times out of 10 they are always more expensive. Somtimes you might not be able to tell which lifter is bad (I tried replacing half of my lifters once and still had one ticking and ended up replacing them all in the end) so I would order a full set of lifters if you can afford it.

Theres a lifter for every valve, I believe the 420a engine that you have is a 16 valve engine, so you need 16 lifters. If I had to guess, OEM lifters will cost you anywhere from $8 - $12 per lifter, so at the most I would say $200 for all 16.

After you call mitsu give autozone or some other local parts store a call to see if they can beat the price.

I just checked on partsamerica.com and they sell them for $11 a piece.

Check your oil level before you do anything! You might just be low on oil, you can also get some oil additive, theres a brand called Lucas that I love for an oil additive, it stopped the ticking in my 4g63 (turbo engines are known to tick). You might even just need an oil change, the older the oil is the thinner it gets...

i have the sam problem with my car everyone has told me its the lifters but i been a punk about changing them hehehe let me know how that turns out ?

I went ahead and replaced all 16 lifters and it still knocks. The only thing that I have found that helps at all is a lighter oil (5W30 for turbo) or even a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil to replace a quart of normal.

unfortunately it is just a common problem with our cars... my lifters don't tick but I have aftermarket lifters tiatnium valves and what not and I always run full synthetic, nothing less than mobil one, but lately I've been running 10w30 Red Line, even before I swapped out the lifters they would tick on cold days with regualr oil, but not with the red line synthetic, I also highly recommend lucas oil additive.
