A friend of mine just got a talon and he ordered a fly wheel for an awd and the car is a fwd. The fly wheel stills bolts up perfect but the starter isn't catching it at all. My question is, if we get a starter for an awd and put it in would it catch? I can't see why it won't unless the bolt of the awd starter is different. But I can't see it being different just the diameter of the flywheel being different. HELP PLEASE!

Ahhh yes. The awd flywheel IS smaller in diameter than the 2wd. This is because there's an extra shaft in the awd transmission that drives the transfer case which would hit on a regular sized flywheel. You have to get a 2wd flywheel and install it. If all other things are good you should be busting bugs once this is done. Good Luck

The reason it still bolts up it's the same engine/crank. As for the rest, Old Mitsu Tech covered it.

I understand this but what I'm asking is the starter in the fwd compared to the awd must be placed at a different angle because the starter isn't reaching the fly wheel in the fwd. Is the starter in awd cars different that fwd?

That can be found out by a call to your local parts house. Ask for the part number for an awd starter, and then a fwd starter.

Either way, the flywheel has to come out and replaced with the fwd flywheel. Nothing will work until that happens.

Good Luck

There is no way around it, the tranny housing will not allow the starter to engage the flywheel that is of the wrong size. The housings have the starters located in different positions to make up for different sized flywheels like the other guys said. :dsm:

Im still not understanding the fly wheel bolted up perfect but the starter is like 1/2 centimeter from catching the fly wheel. If the starter for an awd is a little bigger to make up for the difference in the fly wheel wouldn't it catch then?

Remove transmission, remove awd flywheel. Buy fwd flywheel. Install fwd flywheel. Install transmission. drive car. Or Leave awd flywheel in and Push start car. You have the wrong flywheel. I can't put it any plainer than that.

Dude I understand I got a flywheel for and awd car and that the awd flywheel is just a wee bit small in diameter that the fwd flywheel. But if theres a difference in diamter in the fly wheels from and awd to fwd there also has to be a difference in starters and thats why the starter in his fwd isn't catching the flywheel for and awd.

What I have asked since the beginning of this post is...... Can I put a starter from and awd in this car to it will catch the awd flywheel. As you said the only difference is where the drive shaft connects. Which means that the starter must be a little bit difference in size.

So will putting a awd starter in it catch the flywheel?

That'd be swell if they used a larger pinion on the starter. They don't. They move in the mounting point of the starter.
You have one way to fix it.
