ok, heres my problem. or maybe i'm my own problem. but i just bought my first dsm, and loving it :talon: except for the fact that i have oil all over my engine bay. when i bought the car, there was a flap on my exhaust manifold that was not hooked up to a part of my turbo , a long metal rod with a hole in the end ( can you tell i've never worked with a turbo). i hooked these things back together and went for a ride, not believing how fast the car was compared to before, it was pushing 14 psi, as opposed to maybe 6 or 7 psi before. after i hooked these things back together and went for a ride, i had oil sprayed all over my engine compartment, mostly on the alternator and power steering. wtf is going on here? do i need to replace a gasket somewhere?? i dont know anything about turbos, at all, all i know is that i now have that metal rod unhooked again and going slow again.

also, when im stopped, my car idles high, then low, high then low, high then low, and when i have my brake pushed in, it idles fine. also when i'm in neutral just rolling down a hill, it idles the same way. wtf is going on now? i would like to get this talon running up to par, obviously the person that owned the car before me didn't give a shit. :talon:

That idle you see is caused by a vaccum leak. One or more of your hoses that you come off of your intake manifold are loose, or has a hole in it.

As for the oil being everywhere, you need to make yourself a catch can, so that the oil, instead of going all over the engine bay will gather in a container that you can empty when needed.

I believe the metal rod you are referring to is the wastegate actuator arm, which holds a door shut until a certain amount of pressure pushes against a spring in the actuator itself, pushing it down, pushing the rod down, thus opening the door letting air get out before the turbine. In other words the thing you have unhooked is what regulates the amount of boost you run. When it's unhooked, when any pressure is applied to the door in the turbo it will swing open, allowing exhaust to get out before the turbo, which is why you didn't build much. I don't see how you got to 7 psi though anyways. When you hook that rod back up, you are holding the door closed which is why you're building the 14psi, and which of course is why your car is so much more powerful.

I'm guessing that the previous owner was a silly guy or gal and saw the oil everywhere and was maybe told that unhooking that arm will keep that oil from getting everywhere(as you aren't producing as much power) and unhooked it.

hey thanks for the info DSMcrazy3, i thought for sure i was gonna get a stupid response like "stupid newbie, dont you know anything" or something like that. i really do appreciate your help :thumb: :talon:

Also, check the oil dipstick. The rubber seal on the dipstick gets old and hard and doesn't seal well causing it to pop out under boost and spray oil everywhere. Dipsticks are cheap if that's the problem, or you can crimp the tube a little to help hold it in.

If you're still getting oil everywhere, try checking out the stud that holds the oil filter in place. When I bought my first DSM it had every symptom in the book, including yours. My oil problem turned out to be that the oil filter stud was loose not allowing the filter to seal properly. You can tighten it with an allen wrench easily. If your still having rpm problems, look at your boots on the plug wires. If there's white powdery stuff on them, replace asap. That cured my high rpm stutter. But I also had a low rpm erratic idle that was cured by purchasing a used ISC motor from the local junkyard. The ISC is located on the underside of your throttle body and has 3 screws attaching it.

If the ISC is shot, will it cause the check engine light to come on with the very strange idle pattern?

yes it could cause the cel light to be on depends on how many "steps" the ecu is reading
also I found on my car that the oilfeedtube coming from the oilpan and going to the bottom of the turbo had blew a gasket try that and let me know if it works for you :laser:
