. OK, let's start with the first. A couple of things come to mind. If your counter shaft bearings are going out then you will have noise in all but 4th gear. Bearing noise is very common on these. Fix or replace trans before it gets worse if this is the case. 2nd thing is possible of motor mount rubber bad and letting engine touch metal somewhere transferring engine noise to body. I have this on my car. Try various amounts of acceleration to see if it's worse as you accelerate harder. If it's not worse then it may be bearings in trans. If it gets worse the harder you accelerate then it may be mounts. Other things can contribute. I would raise the car and look up under it and observe things that should not touch like exhaust pipe, mount to mount from engine to frame which would indicate bad rubber in mount. Without hearing the kind of grinding noise it's kind of difficult to track. Another thing that would help especially in your case is a multi channel sound locator. All tool distributors have them like Mac, Matco and Snap-On. Put them around the suspected area and switch channels. When you find the channel that is loudest, move the other sensors closer to that location and go for a drive. Find the channel that is loudest again and move all the other sensors to that location. Repeat until you are definitely in the area. Insane but it works.
