:dsm: 1992 GST. Recently my timing belt lost a couple of teeth and bent all my intake valves. After diagnosing the problem, I bought a new Mitsubishi timing belt, tensioner, front damper, head, exhaust, & intake gaskets, and a buddy gave me a refurbished head. We installed everything to factory specifications, using the original camshafts and hardware in the replacement head. In addition, a new starter was installed, gel-cell battery, and brand new NGK spark plugs(stock specifications). When starting, the engine cranks but does not turn over. I've checked and rechecked the timing to no avail...I've also checked for spark, and fuel...OK. I've also checked from time to time the battery power, which is also satisfactory. The only thing I'm not too sure about is the compression(although it has backfired through the intake after trying different firing orders with the coil pack, and also can hear gurgling through the tailpipe). I've adjusted the cam-angle sensor 180-degrees and have tried advancing and retarding the timing for each 180-degree turn. So I have fuel, spark, battery power, all starter relays and the MPI has been tested with a multi-meter, the starter is NOT faulty, I've replaced fuel pressure regulator after finding out it was blown after the belt let go, and I possibly have compression(I'll find out for sure once I get my compression tester 80 miles away from my house to the car's actual location!) Is there anything I'm missing besides checking the compression? Any secrets? And is there anything else I can check/test that could possibly cause my nostart? Or does anyone want to fix my car because I'm tearing out my hair trying to figure out what's wrong!? Any help is greatly appreciated in advance!

well since it has backfired a couple times you should have spark and at least enough fuel to make an explosion, even if the compression was low it should still fire. even if the cam timing was off it would fire. i think its something with your cas. did you plug all the wires back in? you do have new plugs im assuming. also did you forget to plug you fuel injectors in? oh, when you turn the key on, listen for your fuel pump to run for a few secs. maybe hold the gas line and have a friend turn it on and see if the line gets cold. also check that your firing order is right. its 4123.

:dsm: I've got a 1992 gst. Recently, on my way to my girlfriend's parent's house in CT, I lost a couple of teeth on my timing belt. The head, of course was junk. After meticulous inspection, I had bought a brand new: timing belt, tensioner, front damper, [head, intake, & exhaust] gaskets, brand new NGK spark plugs, and a buddy hooked it up with a rebuilt head. We swapped over the camshafts, rocker arms, and the hardware. All components were installed and tourqed to factory specs, and the belt is timed dead-nuts. In addition to the valve train, I also purchased a re-manned starter, and a new gel-cell battery. After trying to crank the car over, she still wouldn't budge. We've tried different firing orders, checked and re-checked the timing, belt tension, checked for fuel and spark, and even adjusted the cam positioning sensor 180 deg. and retarding and advancing it to no avail...I've inspected the MPI fuse, starter relay, and occasionally checked battery power...all are OK! The only thing I'm not 100% sure of is compression...I havn't had a chance to get my compression tester down to the car(the car's location is 80+ miles away from my house!). So I've got fuel, spark, battery power, all electrical components are OK, yes, the tank's full and the fuel is the correct octane(93), and the fuel is definitely getting to the injectors(after countless times cranking, the fuel sprays out of a small crack in the exhaust manifold, and I've also had to dry off the pistons with a blow dryer prevent further flooding). Besides a possible compression problem(because the original pistons are still in there and made some contact with the intake valves), is there anything else I could check/test? Is it possible the cam positioning sensor is bad? The check engine light isn't on, and my diagnostic equipment isn't compatible with the OBD I, so I'm not sure if there are any codes. Also: I had to replace the factory fuel pressure regulator(it had blown after the belt let go), with one out of a 4g63 n/a. My buddy says it should at least start. Is this true? Is it a possible trouble zone? I don't wanna lose my baby, anyone with any info please help...or fix my car 'cause I'm ripping my hair out trying to figure out what the hell is wrong with it...pix of the project are coming soon to give better prospective...thank you to all in advance! :toobad:

:toobad: :dsm: I have put a couple of posts up for my 1992 Gst...I can't get it to run. I've tried everything except for a compression test. Read my threads on "Can't get my DSM resurrected", and any others I may have posted before you respond. If there is anyone in the CT area somewhere around Westbrook, that knows the DSM 4g63 turbo like the back of their hand, please drop me a line...I'm dying to get back in the cockpit like you wouldn't believe. I don't have money, yet, but I'm sure I can get some sort of payment arranged or if you're just feeling generous, any effort is very much appreciated. If you don't have any tools, tell me in advance so I can acquire them. I'll also make a 12-rack of your preference a present to any that apply! Help me out...us DSMr's are a family, and would be sad if a 1g passed away!

How do you know that the fuel pressure regulator blew? My 90 Laser Turbo's timing belt slipped (didn't bend valves) and I retimed it now it is at a loss for power and wont idle right, but only after you touch the gas pedal.

Three things you will need to start the car:

1. Proper air/fuel mixture. Did you at least pull the return line off the fpr while you crank to make sure you're getting fuel?

2. Properly timed ignition. You have mentioned playing with the cas but have you actually pull one wire at time, attach a plug and ground it while you crank to ensure that you have spark on all fours? The firing order going from left to right, head = 4321 and coils = 4123.

4. Compression. Although you have double checked the valve timing, due to possible damage to piston/cylinder, a compression test is a must.
