tranny problem

I have a 97 Eclipse gs. When I accelerate, I hear a grinding noise trough first gear. It stops when i shift to second, then grinds through second and stops completely from third on up. it still shifts smoothly and catches fine. but what could be causing the grinding noise? I figured I'd ask you guys before i dish out $$ to someone.

Change the fluid, check if there are metal shavings in the old fluid.

It's a bearing noise. Either way you need to open your transmission and replace the bearing.

Grinding or growling? If it growls in every gear but fourth then the countershaft bearings are going. I would replace quickly as bearings are cheaper than trannies. Grinding? If it's bad enough then splitting the cases should show the problem. Either way you are in for the ol' trans overhaul. One last word of advice if you choose to overhaul. Don't be a chinch. Replace anything that doesn't look clean and nice. Check for spalling in your synchros also. Debris seems to go right to them. Let me know Rick
