I have a problem with my 97 gsx

I was driving kind of fast shiftin around 5000 rpms and it started smelling like something is burning... My rpms dont go up as fast in 2nd and 3rd gear. They pass 3000 very slow. It happened tonight and Im kind of freaking out because i can tell ive lost power. What do you think happened? What could I have burned out... There is no smoke... Just a smell around the engine block? Do you think i toasted a spark plug or maybe messed up my Bov... anyone had that problem before? Please respond...Do you think I burned clutch badly could that be it?

yea those are the heaviest gears the load is on... so my guess is you messed up your clutch... try next day in the morning.... for another drive...... if it still does it..... let me know.... usually when your clutch is slippin your rpms jump but u dont go nowhere so you saying its really slow pass 3000 rpm is kind of strange... what does it smell like? and why does it smell what were u doing?

I was testing how fast it would go the engine was cold it was dumb to do i pushed it too hard... Its a burnt type of smell... Kind of weird when i shift in 3rd the rpms go up slow to and after 3000 and there is a power loss... Hopefully i didnt fry cylinder heads.... Ill post reply in the morning...
 
I know this is kinda an old thread but I just had the same problem today! I was pushing my car and I had the RPM's up to 7000. I felt a loss in power and a burning smell midway through the pull and for a very short time after. Damn! I hope I didn't F anything up. Could I have had my boost controler up too high? What happens if I did? $H!T :notgood: I'll test my compression. My clutch has been slipping on launches but never while driving. It didn't smell like a burning clutch eigther. I dunno. Any insights?

Do you have boost gauge on the car? If so, do you know if you have it set at 15psi? If you have the boost controller and no boost gauge (not the factory one but an aftermarket one) then you could be over boosting. My guess would be that you rosted you clutch a little. Has your car been acting up since the initial problem or was it just that one time?:thumb: :talon:
 
I have a boost gauge and it goes a little over 1bar of pressure but I just now did a conversion for it to see that 1 bar is 14 psi so I wasn't sure what it was set at. I might have gone over 15 psi on a couple of pulls. And I have noticed only on the top end (like 6k-7k rpm) that my car seems to slow down acceleration more than to be expected after I installed my boost controller.
 
I read in your profile that you have RRE downpipe. Did you port the o2 housing/ turbine housing? You could be getting boost creep and that would lead to bigger problems then what you initally inquired about.

p.s. thanks for the link. very educational! My boost gauge doesn't increase it just hits a mark then creeps down after a while
