Alternator Blues

i think my alternator has died in my car. my old battery went dead the other day. the battery needed to be replaced anyways so i got a new one. i drove the car for the past 2 days. tonite im drivin home and each time i hit the brakes the lights dim. i turn the car off and go to lock the doors and the battery is dead. how can i test the alternator to see if it is the problem or if its something else. like the insulator on the power wire to the alternator. which is torn a bit by the way.

Disconnect the battery while the engine is running. If engine dies, the alternator (or it's wiring) is bad. Also check the 100A. fuse and all wire connections to be clean and tight.
