Timing belt, if the backing plate is backwards are valves bent?

A friend bought a 90 Laser with a "rebuilt motor" from a guy that "Hates front wheel drive, don't know nothin about dohc engines" Nice huh?

The car idles rough, and is leaking oil from around the front cover. suspected the timing belt to be off a tooth or three, anyway I put a timing light on it and finally found the mark.

It was about 8pm on the crank pulley where if 5* btdc would be around 11pm. Once I got down to the belt itself it looked like all the marks were lined up perfect. The oil leak is coming from the crank seal so I started pulling off timing belt sprockets to replace the seal.

After looking at the old marks from the sprockets that are worn into the backing plate I'm convinced the backing plate was put on backwards. That would mean the crank sprocket was off by about 4-5? teeth. Are the valves bent or is it probably ok?

My next question might sound dumb. I don't have anything in front of me to look at, I could go find my old parts in the garage and figure it out but if someone just knows that would help.

Once I put the backing plate back on correctly do I rotate the crank clockwise? If I'm thinking about this right that would take me almost completely around. When I really need the crank backed up about 4-5 teeth.

Thanks guys, and girls (if there are any others besides myself)
