so my car makes a siren like noise when i start it cold and get on the highway right away. once it's warmed up it's fine. the noise is not a belt squeaking. seriously the first time i heard it i thought there was a cop nearby.
the noise rises with acceleration and stops when i shift gears. i think it's from the turbo so i pulled off the hose and checked for play in the turbo but it felt good. no up-down or side-side. the car still makes full boost.
if my turbo is bad then i should expect to find oil in the ic right?

Can you narrow down the area from where the noise is originating
Could be a cracked exhaust maifold / blown exhaust gasket, a vacume/boost leak or even mechanical like a bad throwout bearing :dsm:

Turbo whislte: like a police siren from a few blocks away sound?

Solution: DOn't get on it hard/boost till engine reaches full temp.

May be looking at replacing the turbo, but if it's boosting good you have some time to save the money ;)

mine's doing the same thing at all operating temps. but i can't build boost. so i'm going to check the turbo and for a boost leak

"Turbo whislte: like a police siren from a few blocks away sound?"

thats the sound exactly. i drive gently until it's warmed up, but i figured this turbo was on the way out. and it's only 2 years old. more $$$.

Yeah it's your turbo and it's probably shot. How are the fins on it? Any bent or shredded fins? You said you check for up/down/side/side shaft play, but did you check the in and out shaft play. Mine was completely destroyed due to in out shaft play and it sounded exactly like an old school police siren.

I wouldn't drive it around much because if it does put the compressor wheel into the housing you'll be sending little chunks of metal into the engine.

no, so far all the fins look good. my car will be coming off the road anyway bc i am losing oil into the coolant (hopefully throught the oil cooler), so i will check out the turbo a bit better. looks like i'll be driving a crappy 4dr AT for a while.
