lethbridge,
hey guys, i just put a rebuilt head onto my car and my car runs and everything, but its developed 2 oil leaks, the first one is from the oil feed line for the turbo, i did a steel braid tube mod and thats just going to be a touch-up job. but the second one is kinda tricky. the leak is somewhere on the timing belt side of the car.

the one that is leaking from the oil feed line looks like there is clean oil leaking out. but the one from the timing belt side looks really dirty and dark. i'm wondering if this leak would be most likely coming from the oil pan. there is a noticable difference in the colour of the two oil leaks.

one more thing to add, while the car was running with the new head, it seemed to have really high oil pressure. like the needle while cruising would be about 3 quarters past the middle mark on the guage. and while boosting, the needle would be about an eighth away from hitting the high mark. i'm not sure if this is normal or not. but just something noted.

my theory is that after the head replacement, for unknown reasons my oil pressure is a lot higher than it usually is. if there was more pressure inside the oil pan, maybe i just blew the pan gasket.........easy fix, but why is there so much more pressure now?

could it be that my rings are blown? have i got compression leaking into the pan now?

thank you guys for reading and any suggestions would be a great help.

Jason.

You could make sure your PCV is operating correctly. That could cause excess crankcase pressure. However, DSM usually have high oil pressure. Investing in an oil pressure gauge isn't a bad idea. The oil leak from the timing belt side of the motor, you might want to take the timing covers off and try and pinpoint the leak first. An oil pan isn't the easiest job in the world. Is it possibly leaking from the valve cover and just dripping all the way down?

i thought about that, as mentioned, i had two leaks, one was from the oil feed line, and one appearing on the timing belt side. but there is such a big difference in oil colour between the two though, if it was leaking from the valve cover (which i'm not ruling out), or for that matter the head gasket i just replaced, then wouldn't the oil leaking out match in colour somewhat closely to the oil leaking out of the oil feed line which is from the head?

which leads me to think that it must be from somewhere around the bottom, from the oil pump, or pan or something. maybe somewhere pre-filtered?

how can i check my pcv valve system by the way? you may be correct and i might have it wrong...

thank you very much for your help!!!!!

Jason.

Take it out and shake it. If it doesn't rattle, replace it. The color is the strange thing about your problem. Oil, regardless of where the leak is from, should be at least close to the same color. What it could be is the oil feed is oil that has come straight from the filter therefore it's clean. You're feeding from the filter housing right? The other leak could be simply dirty oil, but it will be hard to tell exactly until the find exactly where it is leaking from.
