Well today i decided to do some work on my 99 GSX.... i had a very bad exhaust leak right at the back of the car ( flange at the axle) ..... took off my exhaust (it's a GReddy cat back) and clean the SS muffler, notice a rattilng sound, turn it over and a TON of carbon pours out WTF i wack at it with a hammer ( not hard, just enough to break some of it out ) and i get these huge chunks of built-up carbon (ill post a pic tomm.) anyways i put it back on and use some FIPG for the gasket ( local parts store dosen't have 3" exh. gaskets)..bolt her back up and start it up.... sounds GGGGRREAT~! take around the block and it sounds Brand new again.......

here comes the sad part................................

have to run to the store....... get in back out of my yard, take the first right and POP!!!........ car dies WTF get off to the side and try to start it, nothing.... :barf: push it back home and pop the hood, sure as sh!t the timing belt has shredded, not completely but about 1/8th of the way... then i notice a piece of the BS belt just lyin in the cover....i am so  ....

well the rest of this week ill be working on the timing assembly... just curious if anyone knows if breaking the BS belt is bad for the car.... what i mean is if i replace everything will it be okay??? i am also considering getting the BS removal kit so i don't have to worry bout this in the future... sorry so long..just want to share my woes

It is very bad. for one your valves will be bent if your timmimn belt broke, not to mention you could have had maybe piston slap or what not trying to recrank it.
And yes REMOVE YOUR BALANCE SHAFTS. same thing happend to my friends 1g. BS belt broke stuck in timming belt and skipped timmming bent valves.

Bent valves suck, I really hope that isn't the case, but if your car just died on you I think it might be. Hopefully your pistons are alright as well, if you were just cruising at a lower rpm then you're probably fine.

yeah i didn't even get up to 15mph, i did try starting it a couple times while on the road... do you guys think i am gonna have to remove the head??? oh yeah the timing looks ok.. ill be checking later on today...

If the belt didn't break, it could have jumped a tooth. For peace of mind, i would pop the head. It's not much more work once the belt is removed.

not to go off topic and such, but is there a limit to when you do the BS removal?? I have 120k on mine, and im doing the Tbelt and replacing the front case gasket and such, just though i would ask, because when i took my belts off, and got to the bs belt, did't take much to snap it, it was cracked to heck and back, see picture.

As in you shouldn't remove it after X number of miles? No. Its there for people purposes, so they don't bi*** that the engine shakes too much. You can remove it at any time.

ok, that works, tobad i just got the BS pully the other day, i was just going to put it back on, all well. ROFL

well i have gotten the timing cover off and here's the damage

cam sprokets seem to line up fine
i can not get the efin oil pump and crankshaft to line up for nothing!
just like i thought the BS belt snapped
seems to have done a nnumber on the metal plate behind the crankshaft sproket... ill post a couple pics in just a few...
:barf:

here ya go:

pic 1 is of the stuff i removed from the axle back muffler and the broken BS belt:

pic 2 is of the timing on the camshaft sprockets ( i know they need to be rotated till the othe timing marks line up but the good news is they do~!):

pic 3 is of the damage that was done to the crankshaft sprocket and the metal plate behind it:

i don't know but it looks like i will be pulling the engine since the damage is a lot worse than i thought........... :notgood:

i do on the other hand see a stroker kit being put in in stead of the original 2.0 :thumb:

dam, it looks like it did a number, and if you do pull it, make sure your dowl pins are up when you pull the tblet..

2.4 stroker nice

just noticed, to bad you wasnt closer to PA, i might by the old engine off ya LOL!

im thinking its gonna be a bi*** trying to fix this with the motor in the car.... so i might pull it but i don't think i am gonna sell it, the motor that is........ well i am gonna go finish the t-belt later its over 100 degrees here and it's too hot to keep working till the sun goes down.... :thumb:

sorry to hear about your loss......

did those black chunks fall out of the exhaust?? I've never seen that before

yeah those black chuncks fell out of the exhaust.. one fell out all by itself then i wacked the pipe with a hammer a couple times and all the others decided to follow along, when i put the exhaust back on two more shot straight out of the exhaust.... LOL!

yeah the heat and the humid air has put a hold on working on mine on some days. I hope it chills out soon, my parts that im waiting on to put it back together will be here by the weekend, be nice to fire that thing up with the new trans and evo on it :rocks:

well i decided to pull the motor OMG after looking at it and trying for an hour to get all the timing marks lined up i still can't the camshaft sprockets line up perfect but the oil and crankshaft sprockets won't even get close ( must have jumped ) well gladly my bro is gonna let me use the 1g for now...ill be posting an update tommorrow................... :barf:

yeah, some things need the engine pulled, basic belt/matince yeah, but something like this or an oil leak, pull the engine, even tho i was told be another dsm'er, that every thing belt side can be done with the motor in....

Good luck, and at least its not another type of car your driving for a back up :thumb: :dsm:

well taking a look at it this morning it i think i am gonna do the 6-bolt swap... the instructions on mangus motorsports dosen't look to bad and 6-bolt motors tend to be a little cheaper.... anyone out there have any expierence with doing the swap??? Was it easy??? i plan on doing most of this stuff myself.... :D

well thought i would give a update on how things are goin..... just about ready to pull the motor and take a look at what happened...by the looks of it the crankshaft is what jumped timing... is this a sign of CW???? just have to do a couple more things to the motor to remove (haven't been able to due to the efin mosson season startin up down here...

The exact same thing happened to me a couple months ago. My balance shaft belt broke and got wedged in between the crank pulley and timing belt, causing the timing belt to slip on the crank pulley, causing 12 valves to make contact with the pistons.

So, I left the timing belt off, bought a new crank angle sensor (it also broke), bought all new valves and put it back together. Runs great. But that really does suck that such an insignificant little crappy belt can break and cause all kinds of hell.
