Car died on the freeway

Hey guys my car just died today on the freeway in the number 4 lane. Yah thats pretty crazy. Anyways, right before my car shut down my cd player kept skipping and shutting off, then suddenly the entire car shut off. I've noticed over the pass 2 days that a funky smell was coming from my vents and when I popped that hood the stench just got stronger. I'm thinking it's my catalytic convertor but I just got a new one less then 2 years ago. I'm wondering if that could be the problem. I also searched around and found out it could as well be my alternator/battery. Would my car shut down if I had a faulty alternator or battery? I thought it was my ECU at first but after jump starting my car it worked. . I'm going to get my battery checked out this afternoon, but I was wondering if there is any way to check if my alternator is faulty without having to remove it from the car. Thanks guys for any help you can give.

Yeah um well let me ask you this did your brake light and battery light show on your gauge cluster if so thats your alternator about to take a crap. second also check your fuse in the engine bay to see if the radio 20amp has malfunctioned. get back to me and let me know

hi i own a 94 plymoth laser . i had the same problem .u might wont to check ur fuse for ur altenator.if that dosent fix it then go to auto zone & have them look at u altinator it may be ur voltage regulater if it is then get ur eletric system checked too

No cause of the 100amp alternator choke fuse would of went out it would of cause more failure and the car would of kept running the speedometer wouldnt of worked as long as the gauges as so on theres more failure then what he speaks happen i dont think its the 100amp
