Hye guys. I have recently inherited a friends 1998 gsx to try and solve a hot start problem for him. The car is bone stock, new belts, water pump, fuel filter, everything else stock. Periodocally after the car shuts off after driving, it will no start. And periodically it won't start al all until it has cooled down, and it starts right up. The car seems to be running rich at idle, and blows smoke when it accelerates. When the car is running it runs great with no hesitation. Do you think it could be the front o2 sensors, but would this make it not start though? The owner says when he cracks it and it doesn't start, and some fuel is smellable. It cranks fine when it does not start, it's just won't fire up. Any insight would be appreciated.

First, find out if you are loosing spark or if it's a fuel problem. Also there is a fuel pressure control solenoid under the hood that is supposed to raise the fuel pressure during hot starts to cut back on vapor lock from the temps under the hood. You might want to look into that. :dsm:

The problem is the car never showed these symptoms to me. So it is hrd to distinquish what is happening. As for the fpr solenoid, i unhooked it and ran the car right to vacumn for testing purposes.

What color smoke is coming out of the exhaust? Blue, white, or black? Is the CEL on?
When the car runs, how does it perform? Does is idle rough, does it bog down in a certain rpm range? How old are the plugs, what are they gaped to, and are they platinum?

The smoke is black. It had ben plugs in it, but i am repalcing them today because they are gapped wrong .38, and dirty. The cel is off. The car seem to run well. I've never driven a stock 2g before. I feel a slight bog in 5-6k range, but, this could just be me used to a larger turbo. Everything is stock for the most part.
