i searched for a while but didnt really find anything that helped me out much, so im starting this thread-

SETUP: )97 gst spyder

PROBLEM: )Engine feels like its about to fall out every time i hit ANY bump.
)Sounds like a clunking noise from engine bay
)I can feel the clunk in the pedals
)feels like north south motion
)Basically it feels like the engine has some slack

i have brand new motor mounts on the side and bottom front, with those replaced, i think it could either be the rear motor mount, or ive read about a ball joint? any help would be great, its really bad and im scared to drive it anymore....if im right about it being the rear motor mount, is there any way to check if the mount is screwed without taking it out? any help would be great, thanks

Usually you can see if it's bad by just looking at it. Ball joints wouldn't be causing your problem if it is indeed your motor flexing. Have you watched the motor as you hit the gas? Does the motor flex a bunch when you do it?
Is your problem only when you're driving?

If you can reproduce the problem with the car in park by simply giving it gas I would say it's your motor mount. If it's only when you're driving then it's suspension related. Could be the bump stops on your shocks. Meaning your shocks went bad.

another thing i didnt mention was that on top of it clunking when i go over bumps, it also clunks almost everytime i hit the gas, ill go out today and check whether or not it rocks when i hit the gas parked, but i know when i sit in the garage and rev it nothing happens? it could be the suspension due to the fact the car has 120000 miles on it and i seriously doubt they have been replaced any time recently, or ever

hey brocklee gs-t, i reread your 2nd post. i would almost guarantee that it is a tranny mount. heres why: you said that it feels like the engine is about to fall out everytime that you hit the gas, but nothin when you just sit there and rev it. it is definitaly a tranny mount because, if you think about it, the tranny isnt under anykind of stress when you just sit there, however when you start driving the torque is kickin in and that tranny will get up and go.

i would almost guarantee a tranny mount, but in the event that it isnt, i would check the lower motor mount. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

how hard is it to switch out the trans mount? i think i can see it on the left side of the engine bay, but ive havent replaced one of those before, any thoughts?

Was this ever resolved (3 years later...)? Only reason I bring this thread back is because I am having pretty much the same exact symptoms that brocklee gs-t described. The mitsu dealer said they thought it could my drivers side motor mount, although it seems like it is on the other side from where the noise is coming from. Also if i shift hard it doesn't always clunk. The other thing they said it could be is an axle, but they checked the axles and said they appeared fine but that they could still be the culprits. Any help on this would be great, because they want me to first replace the motor mount (170 installed) and then if the noise persists they want to put in a new front axle (300+?).

Is there an easy way to get to the bell housing? I'm very new to cars and I have read through the Hayes manual and don't see anything relating to the bell housing. I've also checked these forums but dont see anything. Or if it could be the tranny mount can someone tell me the easiest way to test that? I don't want to sound like a complete retard but im good with computers, not cars, so really a step by step guide would be great.

Thanks for your time.
