Is it just me? Or do DSM's suck...

...at least when they break down? I bought my first DSM, a 94 Talon, and loved it for a year. Then it broke down, and after about 2 months of not being able to fix it, I came across a 93 Talon and bought it. I also loved it for about 2-3 months, but then it broke down. It's now been about 10 months since the first car broke down, and about 6 months since the second one broke down, and I still have no car. I've been through three mechanics, not to mention consulted countless others. These cars are awesome when they run, but so for they've been nothing but hell once they stop running. I'm not really sure of the point of this post, but I just needed to get some of the anger out of my system I guess.

Most people fix their cars when they break down but if you prefer to leave it for dead to buy another one only to have that one die also, I'd say it's time to move on to DSM #3.

Seriously though. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to work on a DSM so between the two cars if you can't find a mechanic that can fix one you either haven't searched very hard or Washington is serioulsy defficient in decent mechanics.

it does suck alot of the time when there down but everybody on this site has been in that position, I've replaced just about every part on my car before I bought a dsm I didn't know jack now I'm swapping out motors and trannies, all my friends come to me to fix theres so I'm making some money. I've worked on almost every dsm around me in one week which is like 5-6 and mines was the only one working once your two are back up you'll be singing a different tune.

Well thats part of the problem. I live on an island, and there's a carquest, napa, and a couple of independents, and thats it. And I'm not leaving them for dead, I worked on the first car myself for almost 6 months before taking to a mechanic, but like a said, I've been through thee and they've all given up. It's just frustrating. I'm sure I'll figure out whats wrong some day, but having 5-6 grand tied up in worthless cars is very annoying. I don't even have any money left to buy anything else, so I've been stuck without a car.

Beleive me I wish I could. I graduate next year and I'm leaving this rock the day after.

Check into some other performance cars that are over a decade old, and that have been used by as young a group as DSM owners are. Tell me how they've held up to the years of abuse.

They're cheap, but DSMs really are miracle cars.

Yes, with a wave of the magic crank, they turn normal people into mechanics! :D

Seriously though, have you posted the problems you're having here on the PD forum? If nothing else, you have the combined knowledge (and misknowledge, unfortunately) of a large group of like-minded individuals. Clicks, clunks and whirrs, or lack thereof... with a good enough description (and maybe an MP3 or AVI for the REALLY tough ones), usually one of the Wisemen at least can come up with a likely cause, and how to check.

Never thought I'd say this, but gah... what I wouldn't do for a garage. Or a four-sided tent thingy, to keep crap from falling in if I take the head off to check the cylinder walls, or the valve cover off to clean the lifters. :b

I've posted my problems like three times, but yeah I'm think that maybe I'll record the sound the car makes when running, and let you guys hear that.
