Just wondering why there isn’t much talk about the intake manifold for noobs. Well, I read an article in Modified the other day (the march 04 issue- for some reason I read the old articles before the new ones :p) and I came across their AEM EMS Evo8 install.

They said “Starting with the intake manifold we can see that the EVO VIII’s manifold has much shorter runners than the 1G or 2G DSMs counterparts. Our experience with the DSMs showed that a fabricated intake manifold with shorter runners and a larger plenum design dramatically increases higher RPM horsepower. The downside is that if the runner length is too short, bottom end torque and horsepower suffers.”

There are other important facts in this article, which is by a guy from AMS, but I don’t have time to find the rest of them  . My point is, the noobs are directed to port their oxygen sensors and exhaust mani’s and first focus on the exhaust side of the turbo. i KNOW that this is very important and frees up the turbo and all that. but why not also focus on the intake mani?

This just came to me (gosh does this seem like a noob from Honda question) but can the evo’s intake mani fit onto the 2G? My more sensible side says probably not, even though they both have the 4G63 (except for the 420A, of course) cuz it just wouldn’t be that easy. Plus, there are probably different plugs, harnesses, sensors, and other sorts of crap that is and isn’t on the evo mani that is on the 2G. BUT then my noob common sense kicks in and says “well, it’s the same friggin engine, RIGHT?! Well then, it should fit!”

So, as my schizophrenia kicks gets underway, I wait for some replies :p

Lots of people change out the intake manifolds. However the answer to your 'why isn't it more common" question lies within two details. One, Sheet Metal INtake Manifolds (SMIM) are expensive as hell. the second problem for most people is that they shift below 7k and SMIM's don't give you enough benifit for the cost. if you were to rev to 8, or 9k rpm, then they (along with camshafts and a built head) would be very beneficial.

As for using an Evo8 intake, i'm not sure. I wouldn't expect it to work, because they're motors are flipped compared to ours. however, since i don't know, i won't guess.

2g owners would benefit greatly from finding an installing an Evo 1-3 intake manifold. It matches the 2g head (same as Evo 1-3) and has much shorter and straighter runners. You can find them from 7 bolt JDM motors from an Evo 1-3 or RVR Turbos (turbo version of our Mitsu Expo or Eagle Summit LX van). I would guestimate based on mods, you would see a 10-15 hp increase over the stock 2g intake.
