Ok, I've been a dumbass for the past 6 months or so, instead of replacing my waterpump I've been doing the stop leak crap to stop it from leaking. Well recently the leak has reappeared, I've since bought a new waterpump, but haven't got around to installing it.

My question is, lately I've noticed that I get, what seems to be, timing pulled during 1st and 2nd gears..but 3rd gear+ seem to operate fine most of the time. I was wondering if it is possible to get performance loss because the pump is seizing? I know I probably look like a dumbass asking this question.

Whilst at the same time, I have a nice ticking noise from the engine thats pretty annoying which I was thinking maybe this could be the performance problem too?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

water pump has a slight chance of seizing. Most likely the seals around the propeller of your water pump is damage that cause the leak. This is mostly due to contaminated coolant or old gasket. It doesnt really affect the performance but it can affect your car if the temperature is too high. Make sure you dont overheat. Pulling the timing is caused by pre ignition or detonation. Which there are lots of factors that can be accounted for, Phantom Knock (lifter tick, loose exhaust or bolts), cheap fuel, air temp. I would suggest changing your water pump and see if you get the knock.

Is the water pump driven by the timing belt? I just wanted to know becuase i have my car sitting on the side of the road right now on the other side of town with a seized water pump and the mechanic asked me the question when i called him for a price and i dont have the car with me right now to take a look at it.

You will still have to pull the t-belt though to replace the water pump, I think that's what he wants to know. :dsm:

why is it neccasary to remove the timing belt when doing a waterpump install? I was just curious. is it cause its in the way or is does timing need to be set with a new pump?

There are certain bolts that you cannot get to without removing the belt and pullies. :dsm:
