Major Electric Problem

For some reason my ground wire is getting hot enough to melt the insulation around the wire. It's typical ground wire and maybe 1' long. The positive wire is getting a tadbit warm but nothing compaired to the negative. It's making the insulation melt off and drip like liquid. When this happens the car dies and the starter will not turn over yet the radio and other electronics are acting fine. What would cause this? Nothing else in the car is acting funny.

That's what im trying to figure out, what has wires thick enough to cause a short like that? A normal wire that's shorting would catch on fire or burn apart before the battery cable would I belive.

Which wire is it? Where does it go from/to? After doing what did this start happening?

the ground, goes from the battery about 1' to a bolt that goes into the frame. The battery is in the rear. I was just driving normal when it happend. Not one other thing in the car was affected...the radio didnt even cut out just the engine.

Is the battery held down securely so the + can't possibly touch anything?

Did you find the problem/short?
With the battery in the back you really should have a negative cable going all the way to the engine. But if you insist on going to the frame then make sure it's at least a 4 gauge cable and have another 4 gauge cable going from the frame to the starter casing bolt.
