How in the hell does a shock just break and hang down in there like that? I looked at it today after its been making noise for a week or so and its just completely stripped from where it was bolted onto. And of course the bolt looks rusted.. and its only got 135k mi on the car, and 75k on motor..

you do realize that most struts are supposed to be replaced about every 3 years.
Shock every two.
Just where did it break? what is hangiung where? that inspection will tell you what failed.
If the entire body is loose, then you had a weld give on the shock body bolt mount.
If the piston and resivoir (SP?) are seperate then the shock failed entirely and just fell apart from abuse/age.
