I have a 1992 talon 2.0L N/T when I bought the car there was a ticking noise in the engine. We originally thought it was becuase a balance shaft bearing was missing and the balance shaft was hitting the block......well we got that replaced with a balance shaft eliminator kit and the ticking was still there.......after that we figured it was the lifters.....those have now been replaced and the tick still remains. So next thing we did was go out and buy a used head that was in good shape and put it on. Now the ticking does not appear to be as bad but still remains. I also have a flooding problem but I'm pretty sure that is due to the ecu being down seeings how it was not only flooding but I was getting no compression at all. The ecu is being replace with an eprom this weekend but I'm still stumped as to what the ticking noise could be....oh and not to be confused with a knock it's not a piston problem all of the bearings for the rods are fine and I defanately know that I did not throw a rod or seize the engine seeings how it still starts and runs
any help you guys could give would be greatly appreciated! thanks :talon:

That's a lot of stuff to replace. After all that work, you oughta rebuild the engine and have the baddest n/t around! :D

Does the ticking go away after the engine warms up? What kind of oil are you using (10w30, 10w40, SAE30, etc)?

have not really kept the engine running long enough to say wether or not it stops after warming up and the type of oil we are using right now is the valvoline for older engines....(for some reason the exacty type is escaping me at the moment) but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about anyway we are also going to replace the whole cooling system too....found out the housing was cracked ....badly. Any other clues as to what it could be??? I'm stuck  :talon:

If it is flooding real bad the oil has to be so diluted with gas it becomes almost the consistency of water, and that will make the lifters tick, maybe check it out.Good luck

I'm defanately going to check that out thanks....I will be getting the new eprom ecu put in this weekend and hopefully that will fix the flooding problem. I will give it another oil change after it's installed. :talon:

Well after 2+ yes, I figured I would update this thread. The ticking turned out to be a spun balance shaft bearing. We eliminated them, basically put a whole new rebuild in, and drove it for about 2 months. Got bored and wanted more, so we decided to do a turbo conversion with all the accumulated parts we had.

Still need to install the lower IC pipe, but it needs modifying so I figure to wait untill we get the Supra IC before we do it.
