Hey, I just bought a '98 GST and I noticed that the "check engine" light doesn't light up at all so I went to AutoZone to have them check the cel and the code P1104 came up, the problem is that they told me that this code stood for a "MAF ground malfunction". Now I looked it up on the forum and in the Chilton book for the Eclipse and found it to stand for "Turbo Wastegate Solenoid malfunction".
CEL codes

My question is: Should I go with what the dude at AutoZone told me or the book? I'm leaning towards the book but I just wanted to MAKE SURE.

The book is correct. Since you just bought the car does the CEL lite when you first turn the key to ON but not Start. It should, just to prove it works. The P1104 is a retained code that might be left over from a previous owners problem that never got reset (especially if the car runs ok). Disconnect the battery negative for 3 minutes (clears the CEL codes in the ECU), then reconnect and run the car to see if the CEL re-appears. If so, it's real.

i agree -- verify that the CEL does work , if not the last owner may have yanked
the bulb on purpose. Clear the CEL and see if it comes back.

On OBD-II, codes don't clear by resetting the battery. This will turn on the CEL if it is on, but the code will still be stored in the system. It needs to be cleared with a scan-tool.

I'm sorry but you are incorrect on this one. Maybe not other makes but every 2g Ecilpse I've worked on clears with either the scan tool or battery disconnection. My '99 Mitsu manual even says so - p.13A-21 under "How to read and erase diagnostic trouble codes".

All OBD-II is the same. I don't see why DSMs would be any different.
I believe the OBD-2 spec only requires clearing codes by the scan tool. Clearing by battery disconnection is left up to the manufacturer. Most manufacturer's do, however, since it usually is cheaper to build and it gives the user a way to reset codes w/o having to buy a scan tool. Even OBD-Codes.com lists this method: http://www.obd-codes.com/faq/reset_obd_codes.php

I pulled out my intrument cluster to see for myself and sure enough there was no bulb in the "Check Engine" spot, so I used the "Washer fluid" buld in its place. I also went ahead and cleared the code to see if maybe it had just been a left over from a past problem and so far so good. Thanks guys, you were alot of help. I appreciate the feedback. :thumb:
