What could it be ???

I have a 98 eclipse GS-T and I washed the engine a week ago. Since then the car runs on 2 cylinders not all the time but most of the time and my tach indicates about half the actual speed the engine is revving. Why ??? The ignition is good and so is the compression. When I probed the injector signal I'm getting nothing on the #1 and #4 cylinders except for the first few seconds when I start the car. I checked most of the connectors and they're ok. Since I can't return any electronic parts I buy I can't do it by trial and error... it could be very expensive.

Is it the coilpack ???
Has this ever happened to anyone else ?

I could use some help.. Thanks.

After i washed my engine, it ran for about 10 minutes and quit, would not restart. The crankshaft postion sensor had water in it, my mechanic took it apart and dried it, which your not supposed to do, and it started but now i have all kinda problems with the car. Not sure about your engine since mine is a 91 but you might want to check that sensor if you have one. They are not cheap to replace. I will probably buy a used one. I learned the hard way to cover electrical connections before washing the engine.

Thanks for the tip but if it was the crankshaft position sensor the car would not run at all. I think I might have found the problem. Water got into the plug for the TPS ... I just cleaned it and it's been running good ... I'll know in a few days if the problem is fixed for good.

We finally found the problem ... and it wasn't the TPS, nor the CK sensor ... water got into the "Power TR Unit" it's a 7 wire (approx.) plug just to the left of the coil packs. Don't ask me what this unit does but your car won't run without it ! And after 2 weeks there was still some water inside it ( had to crack it open) .. before changing the TPS or the CK sensor you should always check this piece ... the CK sensor was expensive to change and from our diagnostics (rpm in dash different than rpm in ecu) even from Mitchell they say that you have to change the CK sensor.. in my case .. WRONG ! paid for nothing !
