Im Jesicca. OMG Im new to the site and was referred from my boyfriend. I recently ran a compression test and came up with the following numbers:

4 3 2 1
200 200 190 180

Car is a *95 Tsi AWD Auto Bone Stock.

Compression test was done fully warmed up with throttle wide open.
I know the stock PSI is 178. What do these high numbers mean. Carbon buildup?

1. Maybe your compression tester is bad (which I doubt)

2. you could have cranked it over to many time. I believe the haynes auto repair book says 3 times

Carbon's possible or your gauge could be off a bit.
Try smoking up the neighborhood with some Seafoam sucked into the PCV hose and see if that doesn't clean things out a little. If that doesn't work Mopar Combustion Chamber Cleaner is a little more agressive in softening up carbon deposits. The old trick was to spray half a can into the intake via the PVC, shut the car down, pull the plugs and spray the rest into the cylinders and let it sit overnight. In the morning suck any standing fluid out to avoid hydrolock, ptu the plugs back in and fire it up until it stops fogging the yard. Change the oil and plugs.

Actually per Haynes
"Crank the engine over at least seven compression strokes and watch the gauge. The compression should build up quickly in a healthy engine. Low compression on the first stroke, followed by gradually increasing presure on successive strokes, indicates worrn poston riings............."

Mine has the same high compression as yours except all were 190 or 195 across the board.

I would lay 10 to 1 you have carbon built up in there. Don't frown....hahahaha
There are many ways to clean it out
1. MCCC
2. Seafoam

If you do a quick search, you'll find tons of info on both.
Good luck

Thanks for all the help!~ :) I have SEAFOAM in the garage.
So, that will me my project for this weekend. Ill keep you updated on the
compression test results....

Since you are going to be working on the car again and doing a compression check reverse the order in which you take it.

The fact you have a range of 180-200 you are getting close to that magic number of 10% variation. This could be that the battery was getting low from all the cranking thus reverse the order.

Depending on your gauge usually if you have installed it correctly 3-4 compressions will be all you need for each cylr. If it keeps building it could mean the needle valve in your compression gauge is sticking and not letting the pressure in. You can remove it for cleaning or replacement with a tire needle valve tool that you find at a bicycle shop. Most automotive needle valves are too stiffly sprung but a bike might work because they are designed to work with a hand pump. Yes, I have seen defective gauges, that read too high or too low. You can check it with a known air compressor and some fiddling. I wouldn't worry about it now since all you want to know is relative pressures.

What was the reason for the compression check, just information gathering?

Other than this how is the car running, same miles on a tank of gas, oil burning, etc.?

Cheers,
GTM

Sorry it took so long to post a reply ive been really busy with work. Anyways I just bought the car and for a really good deal. I just wanted to run a compression test for a peice of mind. I was really happy the results were'nt lower than stock but was puzzled by the high results. It doesnt burn any oil and for a 10 year old car the Turbo still kicks really well. This weekend Ill try reversing the order and see what happens. Like I mentioned Ill keep you guys updated on the results. :talon:

Perfectly normal thing to do and worth while keeping tabs on it when you have the plugs out. Use the same gauge and try to duplicate the conditions.

It's hard enough with some of these people that I can't afford a give a piece of my mind, I hardly have enough for me. ;) But for peace of mind it's nice to see you are interested in knowing about your car. :)

Cheers,
GTM

I do it quite frequently just because I'm anal and I push my car pretty hard.
It's good to know that others care about their cars and want to know/learn about them.
