Ok so Last month I decided to buy a GSX, always been a big fan and got the loan for it. I love the car no question, But the alternator belt started squeeking, I kept driving it anyway and the belt snapped causing me to drive home with no power steering, no alternator, was beautiful. Went to loosen the belt tension and the damn bolt broke off, so i had to order that bolt along with another bolt and the assembly(little piece of metal it screws into). So i get all that back, put on a new belt, Everything is beautiful.... so it hought. Little time goes by and its now squeeking like hell again. Now- I have found some fairly Large chips in my underdrive pulley, which I partially assume is causing the problem. I have the new pulley and belts and plan to put them on tommorrow. However, what bothers me is that when I start my car, i can turn my steering wheel all the wayt o the right or left, and the Battery and CEL lights both come on. Also I have lost power steering a few times randomely when taking sharp lefts into parking lots. Starting to wonder if my crank is starting to walk, or am I just being paranoid, any clues?

I have never experienced crankwalk, but if your clutch pedal sticks down to the floor when you take a hard left, that is one sign of possible crankwalk... the power steering failing on hard corners could be that maybe your fluid is low, and it cant maintain pressure when all the fluid in there gets pulled to the side of the canister.... breaking belts alot is a sign of a possible separated crank pulley, when mine separated, the belts squeaked a bit, and before i knew it, the pulley drew itself in and started rubbing on the timing belt cover.... easy fix in my opinion.. get back to us on here with more details about the problem.

^ ^ ^ I don't know what he thinks he's talking about, because the "belts" have nothing at all to do with harmonic balancing.

But no, belts aren't related to crankwalk.

If your cheeseball underdrive pulley is falling apart, get the hell rid of it.

You're right, the belts have nothing to do with harmonic balancing.

What I'm thinking though is, that if the guy has one of them underdrive pulleys that don't have a harmonic balancer on them, where's all that vibration going? Some of it will go to the belts that are directly wrapped around that pulley... and as such, they'll get stretched and could cause them to break, yes?

Im not sure what you car is doing but I saw that you just got the car last month Im not sure if this is you first DSM but crankwalk isnt as big a problem as people say, dont get me wrong it happens but most people I know lost ther motor messing with boost not crankwalk

Very true. I haven't owned my own DSM for all that long, but I have 5-6 friends who own DSM's, all bought through random third parties, and not a single crank-walker in the bunch.

Your problem sounds pretty damn far from a crank walk, it's when your engine gets to making ####ed up ass ticking noises that you need to worry.

g'luck, I'm sure you'll find it to be some silly little thing causing your probs.

hehe, thx for all the replies guys.

"cheeseball underdrive pulley" isnt quite accurate as it is the Mitsubishi OEM pulley, and its taking full advantage of the harmonic balancer :) , however it has one spot on it that is suffeciently cracked to hell.

There has been 1 time i remember that i went to do a left hand u turn and I kind of floored it get the car to spin, well the clutch went right to the floor and i had to let off the gas and then the clutch came back. I thought this was more of me being a noob and the car never made it into gear, but thought it wsa worth mentioning at least. Think there may have been 1 other time this also happened.

The power steering fluid is fine, lots of it. It was a little low when i checked it a few weeks ago but I filled it, but hasnt dropped at all since I filled it.

WHen I first start the car it squeeks like hell, let it warm up and it seems to stop for the most part but then once i get going if I give it any torque at all the belts squeek again, let off the clutch squeek goes away give it some gas and im usually fine.

Im replacing the underdrive pulley today, the one im replacing it WITH is an aftermarket pulley, just didnt see spending the price mitsu wanted for a heavy pulley. Or thats the plan at least, wont be able to get started tila round 5 or 6pm so itll be fun in the dark , woohoo :D

my car makes 2 different ticking noises also, One i am quite certain is one of the 2 popular solenoids. The other... not really sure, its very suttle, possibly another solenoid not sure

Wait, you have stated that you are running an under drive pulley in your first post and an O.E.M. pulley in this post; which is it?
If you have an O.E.M. pully and it's taking a shit, then this can certainly cause belt issues. Replace it with another O.E.M. if you like your crank.
Aftermarket pullies are the sport of noobs.

Sorry that was just me not stating things correctly, The Pullye on there now is the OEM crank pulley. I am putting on an aftermarket pulley, Guess us noobs like lighting theload :-/

It's really bad news for your crank to run an underdrive w/o a damper; do a Google search.
The O.E. part will often fall to bits causing the problems you're having with belts. It separates from the hub and the pulley walks out until it hits the subframe of the car.
jnz tuning is a good place to get a new pulley.

the aftermarket pulley i got works perfect, just got it on now, I will post pics of the OEM pulley I took off, its ... well hideously deformed, youll all enjoy it. Ill post the pics when I wake up

The pulley is old news, I've killed two myself. You really need to Google search under drive pullies and think about your crank.

im not saying a nice crank pulley with a harmonic balancer isnt a better option, Im saying the one that was on there was all rotted and chipped to crap. The underdrive pulley is brand new and my car is finally solid for the first time since I bought it LOL. Also price is an issue, im very tight on funds atm and the underdrive pulley was 50$ and it cost me another 25$ for the belts, you find me a crank pullye with dampener brand new for 50$ and Im in!

Is the crankpulley a dealer only part? I have no mitsubish dealers withing 60 miles, maybe I could try a jeep dealer and order one for a talon?

I found that the local dodge/plymouth dealer can get most of the parts you need, they just arent always helpful on finding a part number.

Just like everything else, you can pay a little more now or you can pay a lot more later.

Check with parts recyclers, pick and pull... they put these motors in hyundai's too... somewhere there's a chart of which car had it (the accent?) so search the forum for that, then go out and get yourself one that doesn't look like crap to hold you over til you have money... unless you don't plan on putting a lot of miles on this motor, then you can get away with an underdrive for longer.
