2002 WRX,
This is why I don't like loaning my car out... We had/are having a lot of rain down here, so I let my friend borrow the AWD Talon while his convertable stayed in the garage.

Just got a call from him saying that it broke down. I'll go look at it tonight, but if anyone has ideas from the symptoms he described let me know:

Felt like the clutch was slipping.
2 miles later at a light, he went to go, and the revs climbed, but the car just crawled along.
Starts fine, goes into gear fine, it just wont move at any speed, and yet the revs go all the way up.

So what should I be looking for? (please dont say timing belt).

Sounds like he's burned the clutch up. Is he willing to pay for some or all of it?

Cheers,
GTM

Could he burn the clutch up in the space of 2 days?
Ie would it have happened to me anyway if I had been driving it? Clutch was done at 60k it now has 100k+ on it.

He would pay if I asked him to, and if he thought he had caused it.

You can burn a clutch up in 10 minutes or less. How did it get home? Tow bill?

Essentially you don't lend out cars and wives or anything else you can't afford to loose.

I would ask them what they think was fair, more than likely you will need to have flywheel machined so that's an additional expense. I don't know how you drive, clutch at 60k now 100k you had 30% remaining. You do the math, you don't have a car and he does. It wasn't broken when you lent it out or you would have warned him the clutch was weak.

Difficult position, but you should not get the short end on this one just because you were being a nice guy. What was wrong with his car that he couldn't drive, money for fix? Good luck, with friends like this who needs...

Cheers,
GTM

Like I said he'll pay it if I asked him too, but I am not sure it's his fault, so I'll wait on that.

Off to the tech. forums to see how much work it is to replace a clutch :) .....

Sounds like you have reservations, small claims court is filled with these cases and the fairness is as I outlined earlier. Yes we have been having terrible weather and could contribute in some nominal way. Certainly it might make you ride the clutch and slip it more than you normally would as vision is impared, other drivers doing crazy things, being careful to not have an accident etc. but slipping the clutch. It's your call, how important a friend, will the relationship be strained. Did they ask or you offer because of xyz. Let them buy a house gift or something else you wanted but hesitant to spend the money. That might be the best way for they then don't have to feel so guilty or uncomfortable for they don't associate the deed with results.

Clutch job is a PIA, probably a weekend's work at home and hand tools only, don't forget the flywheel machine work.

Cheers,
GTM

Wow you are making way more out of this than it is. Small claims?!
Anyway back to the problem, the clutch.

No,no,no, I was just using that as an example ... not that was something you needed to consider. It was so you could understand what is fair and how courts arive at hopefully correct decisions. Hopefully you are talking only $300??, I can't evaluate if this is pocket change to you or you are groveling going to school and working full time. I don't know the relationship or the degree, or wheather it's being fair to you.

My feelings are if I borrow something I return it the way I received it or better. They could have rented a car for $35/day and never had this problem, would not have put the burden on you and I wouldn't be trying to give you some parental or morality advice. I'm not intending to be flip or condensending, but I'm in a postion to be more objective. Your opening statement was something close to ... 'I don't like to lend out my car because' which suggested you were not happy about it.

Cheers,
GTM

Gotcha, yes I don't like to lend out my car because situations like this can happen.
I like to lend it out because it helps people, and I am not using it. It's a balance, in this case it tipped the wrong way. I see what you are saying though.

$300 is a lot to spend on a car that is worth $2000, that's always the case with this car. But it's such a good $2000 car :) .
