Wiring/Starter prob's?

I had just put a transmission in my car, and the inhibitor switch was different so I got another one and it was a Male Plug-in just like the wiring harness on the car so I cut them both off and layed them on top of each other and wired them together one by one and right after I done it I could hook the battery up and turn switch over and all I would get is "click click" and now that I have put a new starter on it when I hook the battery up the starter starts running but the abbendix is NOT kicking out I'm not sure if the starter is turning backwards or what but what get's me is when I hooked up battery on old starter it didn't do anything till switch turned over but on the new starter it starts running as soon as I hook the battery up, I hahve not tried hooking the battery up and letting the starter run and trying too hit the switch b/c I dont wanna mess up a 200.00 starter, so if any1 would have any info I needed please speak up b/c I aboslutely gotta get this car running.

***UPDATE***

when I hook the battery up smoke rolls out from around the starter and under the dash on the passenger side.
