I have the belts and pulleys off, and I was wondering if it's absolutely necessary to re-do the timing... it looks like i can just take the old pump out and replace it.. but im assuming i have to re-do the timing... why is that? It looks so simple to just thrown on the new pump, but instead i have to take off the t-belt and re-do it all over again.. just seems kind of illogical to me, but i suppose thats how its done.. long story short, my question is.. do i have to re-do the timing or can i just put the new pump in, put the belts and pulleys back on and go... i dont even have the crank pulley off yet, just the water pump pulley and the ac, water pump, and power steering belts...

Yes u have to redo the timing.

Just learn how to do it right and u will have no problms. Timing is not hard to do .

You are a fool if you don't replace the water pump when you change a timing belt for the second time. The money you spend for a NEW pump is well worth the time it takes to change ot out while you are there. Also look at the timing belt routing and tell me how to get the water pump off without removing the timing belt?

the pump has at least 2 interferance bolts that are connected to timing idlers/tensioners... so yeah, pulling the timing belt is a need to do for the water pump...

Real fun is doing the water pump on the DOHC 6G72. Two banks of DOHC cams and the timing belt drives the water pump between the banks. If your off one tooth between the two banks the belt winds up with too much slack between the banks and the cam timing shifts depending on load.
