I have a 1990 Eclipse that ran great until it started to do the typical idle surging that almost ALL Eclipses do, but it just continued to get worse! Now I cant even drive my car a mile down the road without it dying! My car idles at about 500rpm's but it doesn't even sound like a car anymore! It sounds like a growl when I turn the key, like it's not getting enough gas! Then it will die if I dont keep my foot on the gas! I took it to the mits dealers to have a look and they said my PCM and MFT relay have failed! Now what is the REAL name for a PCM and an MFT relay? Is a PCM the same as an ECU? They also said I might need a IAC, I know that means idle.... something. Could someone tell me what that means too please? The dealers want 1,800 to fix my problem, but if I can get the REAL names of these parts I'll buy them on ebay or something so I can have a dsm specialist I know work on it with a better price! Thanks!
 
PCM? you sure they didnt say Ecm? that would be the same as ecu. and MFT could be either mas(maf), or even mfi relay. dunno about the n/t's but all the 1g cars suffer from leaking caps in the ecu. the innards(electrolytic acid) leak out, and destroy the circuit board. do you hear a lot of clicking from the center console area when the motor is dying? if so, that is the mfi relay, which controls fuel pump, injectors, coil, yada, yada.

"IAC"=
Idle Air Control Selinoid. As names states, it controls the amount of air engine gets at idle.

Is this problem only when idling or?...
If it is only while foot completely off gas, look at the IAC and TPS/Idle switch. The connector may be loose (they really do not stay on all that great and work themselves loose easily)

Also, might want to remove ECU (brain box) just to check the caps. No big deal, maybe an hour and your back running (such as it is).

IAC's on Ebay usually go for about 20-40.
