So I am out with a friend last night in his 92 talon tsi awd.
first off, his car is 110% stock with the exception of a ACT clutch and a boost gauge.
Its snowing bad down here so we piled in his car to head home.
He was not driving hard at all, just plowing through the snow in 2nd gear ( Deep deep snow), rpms at a constant 3000-3500, taking our time and watching the roads.
we were the only stupid ones on the road, but we didnt expect the snow to fall as quick as it did.
we come to the end of my road and he says he wants to check his oil and everything in his car before he heads home, its a 30 minute drive for him.
so we roll the car in my garage and pop the hood..
I near keeled over when I lifted his hood.
his exhaust manifold was glowing, and I mean glowing, it was red red red.
the upper part mostly ( right off the engine ). Ive seen pics on the net of glowing turbos and such, but never in real life, I didnt expect it to see it at all, it didnt make sence to me how and why it got so hot.
everything was fine on his car, good oil press, good water temp good everything, and like I say, he wasn't playing around, just trekking through the snow to get home..

one word

WHY ?, Correct me if im wrong, but thats not spose to get like that ? right ? seemed a little hot for my liking.

He can hook up an EGT probe or a datalogger if he is concerned, but I have heard that is is somewhat normal for 1G turbo DSM's to have that issue.

the wastegate on the turbo is stuck open check your boost gauge see what your psi's r and go from there but sounds to me like a waste gate is stuck open happened on a friends tsi and we found out that thats what was happening but be careful not to run it like that too long because it will seriously #### up the head.....alan

If the wastegate was stuck open, You would definatly feel it, You would not be able to build much boost, If any at all.. It would be very laggy. Take your car for a ride up a nice long mountain, And pop the hood.. I bet you'll see the same exact thing.

its normal don't worry, next time you take your car out just drive constantly with no stops for maybe 10 min at full operating temp bring it to a dark place and look at your manifold I garuntee it will look the same. Exhaust gasses are hot, hot exhaust gasses equals hot manifold don't worry.
