I have a 90 turbo laser and I am boosting at stock. This will only happen about 1 out of 5 times, but whenever I get on it some after I shift and I tap the gas it blows blue smoke out of the exhaust(oil). I could take it up to 5k rpms without any boost and shift then tap the gas and it wont do it. It only does it when the turbo spins. Also I think Im getting compression in the head because the valve cover breather is pumping out a good amount of smoke. Could it be a bad head, turbo or what???

Thanks,
Kyle

It would be black, not blue smoke, but do you have your BOV vented to atmostphere or recirculated. If it's vented, recirculate it.

Thats what I was thinking because how can your bov create blue smoke. Also when your turbo is bad I thought it would cause blue smoke and not black. Is their anyway to test the turbo? It does have a little shaft play.

I have blown a few turbos on my 3000 gt VR4 and trust me when I say this.

It's time for a new Turbo.

So that would cause the blue smoke? Also why does it do it every once and a while?

Venting to the atmosphere would cause black not blue.
I was just saying that you should either Get a differnet BOV that recircs or else do one of the other things so you dont lose unmetered air.

Take off your intake pipe and wiggle the shaft of the turbo just to see if there is any shaft play in there. You can also take off the LICP to check for oil in there. I would think that your turbo is going also if you are puffing blue.

I just purchased a 1993 Tsi and I have the same issue. (Guess I should of never taken it for the test drive at night). I'm trying to keep out of the boost, as I am hoping the turbo will last me a little longer as it is very cold here and I don't feel like swapping turbos during a Canadian winter!

Anyone have any idea how long I can go with this if I don't really boost the car? I've been around Turbocharged Imports for a while, but never had this issue with any of my past Turbos. Most of my experience has been with Garrett Turbos which is making it hard for me to choose a replacement. I'm a big fan of the 50 trim, but don't wanna screw around too much with my daily driver. I have other Turbo cars which go fast!

People keep telling me to try a 16g. Maybe I will...

If the smoke is blue, then it is your oil that is burning. It could be your turbo like you mentioned. If you were venting you would be blowing black smoke since you are running a bit richer than normal. If you really want to vent try this:

Also check the piping after the turbo to see if you have any oil in them. If so then it might be time to get another turbo. Hope this helps out a bit.

im 99% sure its the turbo. A blown turbo can cause all sorts of colors of smoke, blue, black, white.........

I had one turbo that blew white under boost, one blew all sorts of black and blue, and one turbo that the center shaft snapped and the compressor wheel was grinding against the compressor cover. I've seen bad turbos cause motors to go too because it burned/leaked all the oil out of the motor. Just pick up a used 14b. I have a fully ported exhaust housing for a 14b if you're interested, PM me.
