Was sitting after work talking to the boss today. He had made a comment at how good my car sounded for having 100k miles on it. So I slowling pressed the gas the tapped it to rev it up. After I let my foot off the gas I watched to tach go to 7grand and the engine made a really wierd noise and it died. Now I can not get it started at allllllll. My original thought was that I might have skipped a tooth on the timing belt. But when I am cranking I do not hear any ticking or clicking. I am also getting a CEL now, but cannot get the car to Autozone to check.

I did a little searching and found one that had a way to check the timing. It said to rotate the crank until the crank pulley (The one that drives all the accessories) lined up to the T marking on the timing belt cover. And then check the cam pulley's. But the both lined up perfectly.

So my only thought now is did the crank pulley skip teeth. Or is it something else? I am going to try and pick up and ODB scanner tomorrow. But just wanted to see what you guys think could have happened.

Thanks

If you have a compression gauge, check the compression of your engine. This could tell you if your timing is off if you get low numbers.

I am going to try a compression test tomorrow. When I was turning the motor by hand yesterday it was definitely keeping compression. Problem is that while I was trying to get the crank pulley off today, I skipped the belt another tooth on the crank side. Tried an electric impact and that did nothing at all. So I am talking my air impact with me tomorrow. Hopefully that will break it loose.

I also found out today that I am getting no spark to any of my plugs. There was also no fuel residue on the plugs. Leading me to believe that the fuel and ignition system are cut. I checked the Haynes manual and it says that the PCM while shut off the ignition and fuel if it does not recieve a signal from the cam and or crank posistion sensor.

So does this mean I somehow screwed the sensor when I rev'd the motor. Or is the timing off really bad and the PCM is not allowing fuel and ignition?

Also forgot to add in my original post. When I let my foot of the gas it almost seemed like the engine rev'd higher than it should have. I had a talk with a Mitsu tech guy and he said its possible that if the timing belt slipped it could have made the engine rev higher.

Any idea's here guys?

I am going to work on it more tomorrow after work. The nice thing is this happened at work, so I have the car pulled in the shop where its warm.

Thanks for your help.

If the belt just skipped another tooth, I wouldn't try to start it again until you fix that. You should reset the timing.

This site shows you how:

I don't this is gonna make it start, though. If your not getting fuel or spark, then there's another problem.

Well guys I figured out what it was. The noise I heard was the sound of my balancer shaft belt breaking and ripping apart my crank position sensor. Hence the reason for the codes(P0335 and P1400). Working on getting a new crank sensor. But they seem like a dealer only item. While I am waiting for that I am going to go put the new belt on and triple check my timing.

thanks for all the help guys.

You got lucky if the balance shaft belt didn't take the timing belt with it when it broke. While you're putting that new balence shaft belt in, go ahead and put a new timing belt in too. :thumb:
