Hey everyone, I recently just setup the timing belt on my 90 AWD. When I tore everything down, and took the timing cover off - everything looked nice and dry last time.

I pulled the timing cover off yesterday, to double check all my timing marks, tension, etc. There was some oil on the belt/timing cover. JUST some, not too much at all - the belt wasn't soaked by and means, nor was anything else, but there was some - too much for comfort. The car was also leaking oil into the ground from the same are of the timing belt.

This is weird because when I pulled everything apart about 4-5 days ago it was BONE DRY. First thought - maybe cam seals? I put a brand new set in when I put my HKS cams in. However, the top cam gears and that area was dry. I also just rebuilt the head about 20 miles ago - and its perfectly clean.

The ptoblem is towards the bottom... I noticed that my oil pan sort of runs through the bottom of the timing cover... If this started to leak - would oil end up in the cover?

I sprayed it all down the Brake Cleaner and patched everything up. I'll see if its still leaking in a bit - and let you know.

I don't know... Any ideas?

Oil leaks in that area could be from the Front case gasket, the Oil pan, the Front B. Shaft, or also the Oil pump sprocket. I know when I removed my balance shafts I had that issue were the front balance shaft sprocket used to be. Could just be a wearing front case gasekt...Let us know what it looks like when you check it again.

when i did my timing belt i got oil ll over the place. i later found out that the balance shaft tensioner's bolt wasnt tight enough because it loosened up after the belt spun a little. why dont you tighten up all of those bolts down there if you havent already, and hopefully that does it

Well guys - last time I took everything apart, I sprayed everything down with brake cleaner, and got all the old oil off. I also put in a new oil pan, with a nice bead of sealant around it - and cleaned both the block and the oil pan completely. So the oil pan isn't leaking.

However, there is still oil leaking from UNDER the timing cover. :(

Looks like the oil is coming right from the crankshaft pulley area... I don't think its the cam seals, as the top of the engine (towards the head) is pretty much bone dry. It doesn't look oily up top - seems to start towards the lower half of the motor.

I'm going to remove the timing cover, and let the car run. Here's what I'm going to be looking for as far as where its leaking from/what to fix:

Balance shaft tensioner's bolt/tighten all bolts
Front case gasket
Front B. Shaft
Oil pump sprocket

Is there ANYTHING else besides the above where it could be leaking...?

Thanks for all the help! :)

I also forgot to mention that the valve cover is also 100% bone dry...

Problem definately is on the block of the motor, not anything above.

I wish it were something simple like that.
