Hi,

I just bought a '91 Talon TSI AWD from a local storage place for $700. Apparently someone left it there for payment of a bill. They told me that the timing belt had snapped. So, I figured a head rebuild and she'd be up and running.

Someone replaced the timing belt, but it looks like there were some other issues. The cover that has the timing marks on it was in the trunk, and it looks like it got pretty torn up by the pullies. We tried to fire it up today, and it it tries to start, but can't, like the timing is off. So, my guess is that they replaced the timing belt but didn't get the timing right because they didn't have the marks on the cover to line it up with. Our next step is to get that cover back on and set the timing and try again, but I figured I would look for ideas first.

Also, they had some other belts off, and one of them runs two small gears about an inch apart down on the side of the engine. Does that have to be there for it to start? I have no idea what it runs. I"m hoping we didn't screw it up worse by trying to start it without that belt, since I didn't notice it was missing until later on.

I hope all this makes sense (I know just enough about engines to get myself in trouble), and thanks in advance. :talon:

it sounds like the balance shaft belt you are talking about on the bottom of the motor/timing belt. i cant honestly tell you what would or did happen. good luck

Well, good news. We pulled the valve cover off today, and turned it over while watching the valves, looks like none of them got bent when the timing belt broke if it even did break. Where do we go from here?

like the other guy said, its the balance shaft belt, and no i doesnt need to be there to start up the car, i bought my eclipse from some used car dealer without that belt on it nad i have driven it a lot without it on and i have had no problems. and i dont have a balance shaft eliminator kit, so dont worry about that

when i re-did my headgasket and went to turn it over, it wouldnt turn over for like 6 minutes, i just keept on trying to turn it on in little incriments while giving it gas at all times and it eventually turned over, but it wont sound happy and will want to stall out if it does that, just give it some gas if it does that. eventually it should start. if not check if u r getting spark and fuel, if not are your interior lights turning on? if not then replace fuse 19 in your fuse block and that will solve that problem. hope i helped at all

Should I also be looking into the possibility of bad ECU capacitors?
