I was driving on the highway and I started to hear a rattling noise coming from under the car. It sounded like it was in the middle or back. Then I heard this noise that sounded like an external dump or rushing air or maybe so metal grinding on something. What evers rattling must be causing this noise. I check under the car and only found that I had a small exhaust leak and one of the two brackets that that hold up the driveshaft, the rubber piece around it was dry rotted and squeaked.. My vacuum is perfect and I feel no performance or driving loss. My shop had the driveshaft unbolted last week when my cluctch was being changed. The rattling is not related to the rpms because I can put it in neutral and the rattling decreases with the mphs. If you have any ideas on what this rattling could be or anything else to check let me know. I have no check engine lights on. Thanks.

First things first:

1) Update your vehicle profile

2) Have you checked your transfer case fluid level?

I just fixed this same problem yesterday. The transfer case has this bell shaped guard on it where the drivshaft slides in. Mine was completely loose. I ran a slit down the middle of it with a dremel and ripped it off. It sounded like I was dragging a hose clamp on a string behind my car. Is this the same sound you hear?

Yes, that is the noise and then sometimes it turns into a loud grinding or something. I think whatever is rattling is getting caught on something. The thing you mentioned that you dremeled, is it possible that the shop when they changed the clutch they did not tighten it or something like that. Let me know more info on it and I will look tomorrow. Thanks. I also noticed the rubber mounts that hold the driveshaft up are pretty beat and if I grab the shaft in the center I can pull it back and forth a little. The rubber looks rotted. Thanks for the help.

Get under teh car and look at it. Its a press fit. There is no bolt holding it on at all.

Those mounts are the carrier bearings, I fixed mine by getting rubber silicone and injecting it into the mounts. I had a real bad vibration, but that cleared it right up. www.vfaq.com shows some good tips on how to do it. Also, if a shop did the clutch, they might have dropped your transfer case, if that thing is loose on it.

What Hyped is talking about is called a dust seal guard in the Chilton manual. I had the same kind of rattilng on my car and after some investigation and some help from hyped (thanks man :thumb: ) I saw that mine was loose and able to travel back and forth in that little space whenever it wants making that rattling noise as it bounces around the shaft :( . Ill be cutting mine off today and let you know if that fixes my rattle, but Im sure it will.

I've just had a clutch done not to long ago. Today I start hearing wierd gear noises in first and 2nd gear. When I shift it gears, I hear this pop. This sounded like back fire but it is not, I have a eliminator dp. It sounds like transfer case is snapin during shifts and the wierd high pitch gear noise sounds like the transfer is going bad. I just put in a new transfer at 57k and now its 95k, this can't be my transfer. I don't drive it hard.

Thats funny because I have filled my carrier bearings with silicone and it works well. Also dropping the transfer case is pry the leading cause of the dust guard on the transfer case rattling.

Whos full of shit now flyboy??
