AC Compressor Problemo

Hey guys, my AC compressor makes a grinding and ticking sound. When I first start it, it makes a screeching sound for about a minute. It gets faster and louder the higher the RPM. I don't have the money to buy a new one right now, they cost like $900. I was just wondering if I could just take the AC compressor belt off for now, until I get a new compressor. Will this do any harm to the car ?

Yes you can take the belt off for now w/no ill effects.
