Saskatoon,
I bought this car for cheap knowing that it would need work. Here is the scoop....

The former owner went to a ten minute oil change and they forgot to put the gasket on the oil filter. Bad idea :). On his drive home ( about ten minutes on the highway to his house) The engine started to run like sheet. He killed the engine right away and inspected. Thus the filter was the culprit.
The engine never ceased, it just started to run like crap after the oil went down far enough. He said the dipstick didnt show any oil. So now the engine starts on the first crank to this day ( Its in a garage waiting for me to fix her) she has a bit of oil leakage still...mostly when running.

I know I need to do a compression test and leak down test......but here is my question

What do you guys think is the reason for the shitty running? she runs real rough and she also surges a little.

I guess I just want to know the best/worst/most likely scenarios are.    :laser:

Well first off i think this guy is full of bullshit..... you dont put a gasket on an oil filter... it has a lil o-ring on the filter...you just spread oil over the oring thats all and it seals. So theres no forgetting to put on a gasket. So he probably ran the engine out of oil or something else is broke.

So basically he probably ran his engine out of oil. Diagnosed it. Decided the engine was ####ed and that he should sell it

Basically engines never should be without oil, i dont care if its only for a second, no oil is soooooooo bad for engines. I wouldnt buy the car unless its real cheap

Well you are correct on the gasket, and it is not exactly an O-ring, and usually you do not “forget” to put it on, but very seldom, the old rubber ring can remain on the oil filter mount, and when the new filter is installed, instant leakage. I have had this happen to me before, but only once, during my jet boat mechanic days, (and it was a new boat, new engine, caught it right away, so no damage, cause we always checked them after an oil change.) But, FYI, it can happen, and you should always check for leakage at filter after oil change.

If he ran it out of oil, and did not seize it, he at very least probably scored the cylinders, and/or burnt the rings, which should show up when you do your compression test. :laser:
